There is a gouge around the grommet, and the back edge of the grommet is chewed up. It gives every appearance of having been tampered with. Photos can be deceptive. The factory may have blown out the back of the hole during drilling, but the back edge of the grommet should be sitting on the surface surrounding the hole, not dinged and tucked inside.
I could be wrong. Just going by visual evidence. If the badge has been removed for rewrap or whatever, it will diminish the 'collector' value of the drum.

Looking at both the snare and the bass drum I think you are right. Both grommets look like they were introduced to a hacksaw. They are cut smooth but short and not flanged. The roughness you see is some kind of wood glue or something. It washed right off. I'm talking to the original owner Sunday... That should shed some more light on it.
I would love to see these in that awesome emerald green sparkle. Just saying. :)

You mean something like this? Cool Dude
Unfortunately, the rack tom is the only one that doesn't need a rewrap. A previous owner did a terrible rewrap job on the 14" FT and the BD has black spots showing through all over under the wrap. I've been pretty set on going with Modern Bermuda Sand (wish I could find champagne sparkle CryBaby), but the more I look at this kit, the more I want to get green glass glitter.

I second Glenn's notion of finding a nice little corner in the house and setting up that kit and banging around! ;)

On that Bass, are those telescope legs or folding? I'm looking for a closeup shot of the mount if it's telescope. Mine have what looks like a makeshift pin in them. Just wondering what it should be.

They are telescoping. I'm guessing you aren't referring to the ring cut into the spur when you say "makeshift pin," are you? I can take a picture of the bracket and spur on my '58 BD, if that will help you. The spur on that drum is 5/16" diameter. Some time later, not sure when, Slingerland started using 3/8" stock for their spurs, which is what I have in the green BD...bought these off feebay, as they weren't present when I got the kit.

Mine look like someone made a ring out of a coat hanger. Just a small peice of wire looped through the top hole and leg.
