1958 Slingerland Set Last viewed: 8 seconds ago

First I want to say thanks to everyone that is helping me here. I find this site full of drum loving kind people. I have learned a lot and have a ways to go. But THANK YOU ALL!You're welcome! Here are a few questions I have left:1. Is it common to wrap the finishes in 3 pieces on the Bass drum? Bass drums were usually done in two pieces - a small section covering the bottom and a large covering the rest. This, added to the fact that there are holes in the drum for the cymbal bracket but not in the wrap, leads me to believe the drum was re-wrapped. This would explain the tampering with the badge grommet that Purdie Shuffle mentioned. The grommet on your drum does not flange out on the inside of the drum like an original. It appears that your kit may have been re-wrapped (and a replacement grommet that wasn't as long as an original put back when reinstalling the badge), which would devalue it in a collector's eyes.2. Did Slingerland offer this set without the cymbal holders? I can't answer this question with any certainty. However, holes weren't cut in shells before wrap was installed. So, I'm pretty sure yours came with the bracket.3. Would restoring add value or would it be in my best interest to sell and let the new owner decide that. (Either way I'm not keeping the drums.) It would add value, but I believe it would cost you more for the parts than you'll get back out of it.a. If I get them restored, how much would I be looking at spending. (Ballpark) The correct chrome-over-brass sticksaver hoop for the 12" tom can run from $25-50, the correct tension rods can cost $2.50 each, and my guess on the cymbal bracket would be $30-50.b. Would parts be available? Parts are available, but it may take a while to find them.4. What is it worth? I have people asking me if I want to sell them but not offering anything on them. I would like to offer a good deal and get the best bang for my buck... or best buck for my bang. Again, I defer this to more knowledgeable members. If it really is a re-wrap, that's going to hurt your value. My guess is $400-600 for the Slingerland drums only, depending on the value of the snare, and that is a TOTAL guess...maybe more, maybe less.5. Sell as a set or part it out? As a purist, I'd hate to see you sell the Slingerland drums separately - they've been a happy family for 54 years. However, sellers do tend to get more when they sell in pieces. CryBaby

I truly hope this helps you, and please don't think I'm trying to rain on your parade. I'm just being honest about what I see and the vintage drum market as I understand it.

I truly wish you the best of luck in selling this kit.

Blessings,

Lynn

Sorry, I said 3 parts but meant to type 2. Two pieces. One small on the bottom and 1 large over the top.

I was offered 450.00 for the snare so I'm guessing it's worth more.

OK, that makes sense, but the holes in the shell and none in the wrap just doesn't seem right. Just to be sure on the grommet issue, I'll look at mine again tonight. However, Purdie knows his stuff, so I'm sure he's got a reason for pointing that out...maybe the crack close to the grommet, which is a sign of grommet/badge tampering. But, shells can crack on their own. I hope Purdie will respond in detail on that subject.

That's a pretty nice offer on the snare! If it was WMP, I'd sure be digging in the couch cushions to make you a good offer.

Again, best of luck!

I apologize for not getting this done last night. Here's a pic of the grommet on the inside of my late 50s snare. Notice how it flares over, not cut of flush with the shell.

Yes. That makes sense. Thanks for doing that Lynn.

The bass drum I have looks long enough to crimp but is not crimped. How does one remove the grommet anyway?

I think I will get with the guy I got them from and try to get more info from him. He's the only one to ever own them and does not strike me as the type to attempt a restore of any kind. "He said he was 8 when he got them, played the hell out of them" (I guess their Christian drums now :) ) ... "and then they sat in his parents garage "in the way" for many years."

My math is not the best but if he was 8 when he got them new, that makes him 62ish. If he stopped playing them in "his teens," they were "in the way" at least 41 years. Add all that together and I'm glad they were still in the way when I came along. :0)

Right now I'm thinking I would like to sell them as a set. But then again I keep finding myself on ebay searching for parts.

LoLoLoLo I like that...Christian drums. That's funny!

You're welcome for the pic...and any other info that I hope has been accurate and helpful.

I've never removed a grommet, but I've heard of people using a chisel/screwdriver and hammer to punch the inside of the grommet to a small enough diameter to fit back through the hole. I've also heard of people using Dremel's to cut off the inside of the grommet. Such methods tend to leave some chips and scratches around the inside of the hole unless done VERY carefully.

That is certainly a nice kit to be lucky enough to obtain in such a way. You mention "searching for parts." Are you considering fixing it up and hanging onto it...or fixing it up to sell?

Well, I think the longer I have them and the more I do to them the more they will grow on me. I'm not a drummer but can appreciate the history behind them. My wife however, can not. I don't think she likes them sitting in the dining room either. :)

I don't have a lot in them and I'm sure it would be in my best interest to sell them. I have two people really wanting that snare. I know I can get a lot more parting them out but it seems a shame to do so.

I'm open to offers and suggestions.

Ed you can always learn how to play! Find a nice spot in the house for them so the wife likes em better and give it a shot. It's great fun. :)

Well, I do know how to play a bit..(I can keep a beat) and I Love to play. However, I'm better served playing my guitar and singing.

Just looking at the two different 2N Jobbing Outfit ads.

The 55 had two slide in cymbal holders and the attached folding spurs.

The 59 had one slide in cymbal holder and telescope spurs.

Mine has a combo of both. It has two holes for slide in cymbal holders (like to find those) and the telescope spurs.

1958 must have been an experimental year for Slingerland.
