Show Off Your BRONZE! Last viewed: 7 minutes ago

Michael - yours was one of the ones I was thinking of. That was a wonderful creation using traditional Slingy parts. I've been thinking of switching the hoops out for single flange brass hoops with clips. Go for that retro look. Somebody did one like that and it looked like a legitimate antique in mint condition.

Mike is right, some amazing drums came out of that stampede to grab up those shells. Drum building fun at its best.

Thanks for posting the photo.

that looks great Michael! it was neat to see the different directions that these drums took. different hoops, badges, shell finish, strainers. it was way cool..mike

What was really a surprise about the shells was; the guy advertised them all as being made of brass! When I bought mine, I 'thought' I was buying a brass shell. Mine turned out to be bronze, some were copper and yet others were brass. It was 'pot luck' which kind of metal shell you eventually received. The guys that got the copper and bronze shells really lucked out. The price was the same for all of them because the seller thought it was all brass stock.

Lucky us who got in on it! The Slingy bronze I scored is another 'favorite drum' in the arsenal.

PS - For the guys who don't know the story... some guy found and bought some old Slingerland inventory that hadn't seen the light of day since the early to mid 70's. The shells had been sitting on shelves in a warehouse somewhere developing a gorgeous patina on some them, for all those years. The shells were already drilled for Slingy lugs and 'some' even had vent holes. All of the shells were put up for sale on Fleabay, they were NOS (New Old Stock) and in spanking new condition. Only with an age patina that takes years to form. It was an exciting find.

El - I've seem em go for between $350 and $600, it just depends on what's floating around on Fleabay from week to week. Keep an eye out for one, bargains do come along. I 'almost' bought a bare hammered bronze shell that was up for sale awhile back. I had all the Imperials and parts on-hand, so I could have put one together for cheap. The bare shell sold for $250 or something close I recall. Would have been a good score. It's one way you can go if a shell comes up for sale. If you have a bunch of Luddy parts sitting around, it's a no-brainer.

It's not vintage but I do have a very nice Drum Workshop Copper 14x4 that my wife bought for me about 12 years ago. :D

Here's my much loved 552. Missing the diecast rims - which is ok - don't really like them much on snares. I bought this snare during the period when my beloved Pearl GLX kit was in the hands of thieves. In a sort of daze, I saw it secondhand with a modded throw and and bought it cheaply. Now it's my favourite metal snare. The bronze sound is unique.

Hey, they all count! Thanks for posting up shots of some incredible looking (and sounding) drums. Copper and bronze snare drums just have a more 'natural' almost woody tone to them than brass and aluminum drums have. Having owned and played all of the above metal shelled drums I can state unequivocally that bronze and copper shelled snares have sound qualities that are unique.

Keep em coming! I'm loving seeing these great drums. That Sonor collection of snares is nothing short of awesome. Who needs anything else when you have three snares like those in your arsenal. I'm hoping BunE sees this thread and posts a shot of that 6.5" x 14" Luddy bronze that he used in that concert I mentioned. I wrote to him to inquire about the snare originally because they never showed a close-up of the drums during the concert. I'd really like to see that one. Man you had to hear it! It was the drum that convinced me that; I had to have one of those! Jumping2

Post em up! I wanna see more!
