Fibes drum score Last viewed: 1 minute ago

Jeff - I'm actually a little sorry I didn't catch this thread sooner, -before- you stripped the floor tom. The wrap that is on those drums is metal. Which means it can be sanded and polished up back to near original condition. I would have started with some Scotch Brite to knock all the corrosion and many of the cuts and scratches off and then wet sand them up to 1200-1400 grit and put the polish back on. Clear-coat the whole thing and they're good to go for another 100.000 miles. You can only do this with steel drums or drums wrapped in steel. I think you missed an opportunity to restore those back to original. Best of luck with them. I like the idea of paint much more than wrap. Let those fiber-glass shells vibrate freely, to sing.Cool score!John

John I know what you are saying but if you saw the drums in person you would agree they neeed new wraps. The metal ones were very rusty and dented. I did try a test spot on the 16 and decided it would never clean up good enough. Then considered painting the metal wrap but again some of the rust was too deep. I also thought when I saw them on C/L that they would polish up nice but I was wrong. Thanks for you input on the paint, thats the way I am steering toward for the moment.

After seeing the shell once the wrap was removed, and given the condition of the metal , you definately made the right choice. You're options are pretty much unlimited now. I love what Bill did with the mirror gold wrap!

Very interesting project....keep us posted.

Thanks for the input. What do you recomend for a paint color, or do you think its necessary to try and make it origional with chrome wrap. I dont like that the chrome wrap will scratch easy, and thats what jammin-sam told me himself.

I would think painting fiberglass would have it's share of oh no's fiberglass it's self has alot of pits and fibers showing but rewraping in a good wrap from the era of the drums would indeed look awesome... the chrome wrap i agree is a PITA.... my vote would be for Green sparkle hardly seen and does justice to the drums sizes.. IMO.... :)

Mike what you say about fiber glass is true. These shells woudl need a lot of prep work first but could be done. I used to belong to a Street Rod club ( still have my 40 Ford Coupe) and know lots of guys who would give good advice. So painting is not a problem here, its really deciding whats right. I dont know if these drums are very collectable or not. If they were Ludwigs from the seventies I would take em back to origional for sure. I like to find old cheep drums and wrap with veneer or paint because its what I am good at. The Fibes drums seem like pvery good quality so I dont want to just dive into it with out thinking first. I like sparkles but pearls are nicer to me. If its paint then a solid color might be kinda boring, heck I dont know.

But thanks for your input, it helps to know what others think.
