What are 60's Oyblack Jazzfests fetching ? Last viewed: 6 hours ago
One question, on the supposedly NOS JF pictured a couple pages back. Shouldn't the bottom hoop have the drop gate, which would have been the correct hoop for that time period right?
1964 Ludwig Club Date Red Sparkle
1967 Ludwig Super Classic Oyster Black Pearl
1967 Ludwig Super Classic Pink Champagne Sparkle
1969 Ludwig Hollywood Sky Blue Pearl
1971 Ludwig Big Beat Black Panther
1976 Ludwig Power Factory Outfit Black Vistalite
1997 Mapex Orion Classic Transparent Purple
I actually own a rewrapped 60's Ringo snare that has pretty much the same specs as Ringo's. It actually looks pretty cool but it was probably done in the 90's as I have had it for quite some time. I would love to have it wrapped over with an original piece of wrap but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
I remember seeing one from about 1966 at the Bston drum show(before it changed to the Conn drum show) and the seller wanted $900.00. This was probably around 1997 and I kick myself for not grabbing it. $900 seemed like a lot of money to me then! Lol...
It sucks that there are so few of them but I guess that makes it cool too if you own one. Just imagine how much easier it was for Ludwig to sell most every set with a supra? They could make millions of them and never have to worry about matching one to a set. While that stinks for us all these years later, it sure made it a hell of a lot easier for Ludwig at the time!
So I believe according to my catalogs they stop selling jf with kits in 66, except the downbeat that u were still able to get the 4x14 wood snare with that kit.. Does this sound about right ?

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
Honestly I have a hard time believing the catalogs. I wonder how many people ordered out of the catalog anyway? I would'nt be surprised if they just put a supra with a set once the craze started and the stores just sold them off the floor that way.
I would imagine unless the store had it in stock, one would have to order the set with a jazzfest. That would be my guess. I love the catalogs but they can be pretty unreliable as to what was offered when. I often think of the catalog as a blueprint. Look how many sets show up with a 20,13,16 and it was not listed as a catalog option. Just my guess.
For guys that were around then, did any of you pay attention to weather or not the drum was metal or wood. Maybe if you were young and this was a first set, or a first good set then you were just happy to get whatever the set came with. I have heard so many stories of people that were young that got a certain color because the store had that in stock. Seems like an easy way to sell a set with a supra...

Check out this picture Kurt...Appears to be from the height of the "Beatle Boom". 50 Ludwig sets ready to sell and every one appears to have a Supra (or an acro).

I was 15 in 1967 . Sent away for ALL the catalogs : Rogers , Ludwig , Gretsch , Premier , Slingerland ...even Camco . What I ended up wanting after spending countless hours pouring through those catalogs was just too expensive ; a Rogers in Blue Strata Pearl . Must have been about $ 100 more than what I ended up ordering ( thanks to my Ma who took out a loan from the local Beneficial Finance Co. behind my father's back ! ) : a Ludwig Super Classic in Oyster Blue Pearl exactly as it was pictured in the catalog ( white marine Pearl set pictured ) with a Supraphonic . If it had been pictured with a Jazz Festival I would have got that . Didn't matter a hill of beans to me . Still have the set .

Least they could have done was put some sort of plastic sheet under all those drums . Bass drum t-tods must have gotten scratched under the weight .

Kevin, I have seen the pic before but it always gets my heart racing! I can't imagine what it would have been like to be in that store back in the 60's. I went once in 1998 and it was cool but seeing all those amazing new Ludwig sets sure is a thing of beauty!
I know you mentioned in another thread about Ludwig churning out tons of Beatle sets but looking at this pic it looks like a lot of sparkles, some sky blue with some other colors. It's hard to tell but it looks to me like I can only see one Oyster Black set.
