Thinking about buying this '61 Ludwig Last viewed: 13 minutes ago

i didnt study the pics a great deal. but, here is one possible explanation. the pre serial hollywood kits had a center double tom mount. the mount was a little different looking than the later ones. but it could have been changed. makes sense so far. the pre serial hollywoods were 22/12/12/16. the 12's had a clip mount. the mount thats on there now could have replaced it. the hollywoods would not have had a bass drum cymbal mount. this could have been added. this just a theory. now, if there are holes for a rail mount, thats a whole other story. plus, there would be a missing tom somewhere if it was a hollywood.i own a keystone sky blue pearl hollywood kit as does purdie shuffle.mike

Would you buy it either way for 700 ?

i think thats a little strong for extra drilled holes and modifications. its certainly 700 bucks worth of quality drums and sound. thats a certain. if drums are hard to find in your area, you might consider there. pre serial stuff is really desirable. they should/might have chrome over brass hoops on the toms. that would be a premium. if youre not planning on reselling them, 700 isn't a deal breaker. i would address the modifications with the seller and try for 500 bucks.

I would think of this as an 'interim' kit. A nice-sounding kit that you could play until something better comes along. But as was mentioned, the extra holes are going to make it a hard resell. For me personally, I would look for something more intact and original. But you could point out all of the 'misdeeds' that have been done to the drum, and offer him $400, because IMHO that's what it really should be selling for.

Thanks, well there is some argument that it may be a hollywood kit that had 2 '12 toms that would justify the double tom mount
