I have many pics. of that shadow created by the thickness of the hoop and you can even make out the t-rod wings on some !!. I have a shot of the clear head on a Vista, and the three rings zoso actually is on a clear sticker. you can search these files on zep.com to get anything you want, if not go to their forums and ask his kid !!
I wanna add that the Ludwig logo is not on the sticker on the vista, it`s smaller and on top !!
Everytime I look at the green sparkle Bonham set the more I really want one.
Anyway every time I look at the pic I'm seeing a outline followed up around the "L" in Ludwig then it continues to curve as a perfect circle like the rest. Like a overlay or under lay cut around the L. Whichever it might be. :)
Admittedly I am not the Bonham expert that many here are, but since the issues was brought up, this is undoubtedly NOT a shadow. I wonder what it is?

That`s the logo pulled off, like the clear vista, you can see the zoso on a decal and the Ludwig logo is on the top like that !! This is the first I have heard of claims John use a damper on his reso head !! As far as people who knew him, he didn`t !!

That may be so, but I don't ever remember seeing ANY pics of the natural maple kit ever having the three rings logo on the front head......so that theory goes out the window with the natural maple kit. I suppose that could be a possibility with the green sparkle kit. I still say shadow/reflection......

that pic is nothing like the ring on the green set and i agree no logo before the green set as i stated before it is no big deal and probably ever after that they had custom front heads made.... i stick to my story it is a sticker /decal/ something with both the logo and the Ludwig logo on it probably made up by Ludwig.. after all he was a revcent endorser and about the time of the green set they were really taking off....
1. A shadow is not possible unless he was playing on Endor with the Ewok band and they were outdoors with Endor's 7 suns shining all over the sky.......
2. Maybe, just maybe, in the interest of remaining competitive and unique in his chosen profession, 'ol JHB didn't want everyone knowing his secrets to his sound and there aren't any documented explanations of what that ring is.
3. Is it possible he may have cut out a second reso head and installed it inside of the intact reso head. That is what it looks like to me. Or, it is a scarring efffect from the floor tom always scraping at the reso head there when he stacks his drums up......., or he has a flashlight inside his kick drum and it is creating this effect. He does that in case the power goes out.........Or, it is a thin layer of super glue he trowled on around the outer 3" of the reso head to hopefully someday have a bunch of guys sitting around their computers, that he also envisioned years ahead of the technological revolution, so that they would keep posting pictures of his drum kits. Along with being everything herculian concerning drums, JHB was also a legendary visionary, rivaling Nostradamus, and he even guessed the outcome of a Magic 8-ball six times in a row correctly once!!
