John Bonham "Ritchie Ring" on bass drum

From Rik_Everglade

When you look down a tube, perspective relation makes the other end look smaller, so I think we are seeing the lighter part through the frosted front head as environmental, and the "darker" ring is just the non-light of the "tube".

In other words, an optical illusion.........which is what I said pages and pages ago.....thank you, finally more than one other person here agrees with me!

I agree, the first pic with the Olympic rings on it is a stick-on-logo. The transluscense of the ring is backwards to support the tunnel-vision theory. If we were seeing the batter hoop through the reso head, and therefore seeing "a ring", the ring's O.D. would be solid and the inner portion would be translucent, or we would not be able to see anything through the reso head at all.

Sure it is. There were three new posts this evening. Mike T, Rick Everglades and Ludwig Dude. Why not add to the discussion?????

Peace

Check out Royal Albert Hall dvd it sure likes a ring to me. Sorry for keeping this going, but the light is reflecting off a clear plastic ring. At least I think it is!? Will there ever be a definitive answer to this question that has plagued mankind since the beginning of...um, well this thread...

It's definitely a muffling device he used on the reso head. It can be seen in many different photographs of his kits. Even on the amber vista kit, you can see it in certain pictures as well (though it wasn't quite as large/wide as it was on the maple & green sparkle kits).

This is one of the better shots where you can see it.

i went thru my ludwig photo archives (some via google) for my ludwig pictoral site i'm working on, and pulled some bonham photos. i eliminated all pics that are obvious shadows. including the amber kit due to the fact that lighting can cast ALOT of shadows and reflections from the batter head.

as far as shadowing on the green spkl kit, you can kinda see it in the 1st pic that's from the same gig that there's a outline of a ring.

in the 2nd color pic (presumably from the same gig) you can see a ring. the shadowing from the sun can not make a perfect shadow ring on the head at anytime of day.

i say he cut a clear drum head and made a ring. i hear that's been a studio trick since atleast the 60's. if anyone has tried to cut a circle in a head, its very hard.

i don't think large stickers exsisted back then either, especially for bass drum heads. in the original pic on this post (which i have too) the ring looks like its alittle over the corner of the "G" in ludwig. so its gotta be a ring.

and lastly, the final 2 pics from 68/69 show a ring on the maple kit.

has anyone asked his drum tech jeff Ochletree?
