John Bonham "Ritchie Ring" on bass drum Last viewed: 18 minutes ago

I guess enough time has passed that tempers have subsided so I'll carefully jump back in. While this would not account for any ring appearance on the Vistalite kit, the ring on the others are quite similar to what you would get if you cut a piece of 2" foam and inserted on the interior of the kick around the circumference of the shell and had it touching the reso head. A coated head is only mostly opaque.

Ocheltree may know-he joined up with Bonham later.

It's funny-I was just about to make a video on Bonham's drum muffling when I came across this thread in a Google search. I read an article years ago where John Paul Jones (I think) was talking about how Bonham used to put cut-up newspaper in the bass drum when they were recording, so I was trying to nail down that quote when I found this thread.

Drummerfish said: "i say he cut a clear drum head and made a ring." I agree with that, though it's also possible that he or his roadie used a smaller head (say a 22") as a template and sprayed something (as mentioned earlier above). When I used to do the Zep tribute thing I usd a 22" head as a template and used a brush top spread rubber cement around the edge.

Are you guys still harping on this one? Give up already....its a shadow/reflection....something that only shows up under certain light conditions. Jeff Ocheltree has already dismissed this stating in his DVD what Bonham used for heads, muffling, etc.

Doesn't look like he was careful to use a circular pattern to cut this one out...If that is a cutout ring. Kind of looks like he was drunk and cut it a little oblately.

LD,

Again, not trying to start or even renew an argument, and truly none of this is particularly important, but for the record, these are not shadows nor light reflections with a few notable exceptions. As a career I am a lighting designer for live events, concerts and theater as well as a director of photography for video and film. I do recognize a shadow when I see one.

I realize that you are a pretty serious Bonham fan which is great and I always value your opinion on all of the various forum subjects, but there is no reason to simply dismiss this thread without at least considering what is seen. There is no need to argue; we are just pondering what we are seeing. Certainly he is not using a felt strip on the reso in the photos in question and there is a ring caused by something, be it internal or external. Whether it has anything to do with muffling, who knows? It is interesting to consider however.

I think it's a sticker/decal whatever on all of them for the 3 ring logo. If you look at the first pic, I think I see a funny cut around the "L" in Ludwig. It looks whiter around the top of that "L"
