John Bonham "Ritchie Ring" on bass drum Last viewed: 1 minute ago

Hey everyone,

Recently I have seen a picture of John Bonham, where I think he is using some kind of "Ritchie Ring" on his reso bass drum head?

I'm having problems with recording my 26" bass drum because there is always a "too long" kind of "riing" reso after the beat.

Would a self made "ritchie ring" prevent that "riing"?

How can make one and put it on my bass drum reso head

(Coated ambassador)?

just use 3 or 4 inch felt strips that is why they came on drums in the 60's and if you really want to stop the ring use two on the front and one on the batter..

I am not familiar with the term "Ritchie Ring." Where does that term come from?

Felt strips will do the trick or look into one of the Power Stroke heads or other heads that include a second 2" or so perimeter ring into the construction.

That is an interesting picture as I have never noticed that ring before. I thought at first glance that maybe he had his logo printed and the print was not 26" but my assumption is most, if not all head logos were painted back then.

Ritchie Ring is just a brand name. Like the Rem-O's I think Remo makes. Ive never seen any for a bass drum before though.

Bonham used felt and felt only as Ritchie Rings were not around then. What you see in the picture was probably a dirt ring or when the drum head had the rings put on the head, it could of been sprayed and what your seeing is the color difference.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

Back in the 80s I used to use weatherstripping (that you purchase at the hardware store to insulate around doors and windows and such - foam, with adhesive side to it - comes in a roll.) I applied it right on the top of my toms (toward the edge of the head of course) This was before Richie Ring, Studio Rings, Remo-O s were around (or before I knew about them). It worked quite well for the sound that many were going for at that time - muffled more than rings (I used it on my Remo CS Black Dots.) Of course how much you use determines the degree of effect.

Well, I had a BD recently with a real nice Remo White Ambassador on it (had bought and installed before I discovered the current heads with built in rings in them). So, I decided to use this weatherstripping as opposed to the felts (that frankly I just don't like at all). The end result is very controllable and can be used in a way that looks great too.....see the attached photos. Apply on the inside, they sell it in black white and gray - I suggest you match the color of your head. I used white on the inside of this head.

Thought I would share this idea as I have never seen it done before.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Must be a John thing..

I've used it too.. used it on the reso head of an 18" FT that was giving me some problems.. works fine.. also will come off without a trace with a mild solvent.. I ran a bead of it around the inside of the head about 1" in from the edge..

Cheers

John

That could be overspray from a stencil, though hard to believe the stencil was cut round, but who knows?

There are lots of weather stripping options that would probably solve your resonance issue. Use as much or little as you need. I know felt strips are the vintage thing to do but I don't care for them much either. I don't really like the look or the minor hassle when installing the head. I will have to say that maple kit looks really fantastic though!

my bet is after looking again it the bass drum Logo is or was a decal or sticker made round and probably for a 22 inch bass drum and what we see is the head in the backround contrasting with the decal sticker... i believe this was the first such logo with the 3 rings ever seen on JB's green sparkle drums..
