To me it looks like we are seeing the batter head through a somewhat translucent reso head!
John Bonham "Ritchie Ring" on bass drum
Well isn't this getting interesting. Maybe we are learning something new about Bonham?
The seven suns of Endor? That is very funny and a point well made, though that would look even less like the supposed shadow in the initial picture. The "ring" in the initial photo is no more a shadow than it is in the one I posted a while ago. It would be interesting to know what that is all about. Ludwig Dude, I only see broken links when I try to view the photos you posted so I cannot speak to those but what I can say is that the sun will not produce an equilateral shadow from a drum hoop. The suns rays are nearly parallel from the distance they travel and that is just not possible. By the way, if that is a shadow, where is the shadow of the microphone? I am assuming that the photo I posted with the ThermoGloss kit was a studio shot. If so, it would be very interesting to find out what that was all about. Obviously there are no felt strips in either photo.
Geez, we are starting to sound like conspiracy theorists. Did Led Zepplin ever play Area 51?

Shouldn't be broken links. They appear with my browser....try refreshing your browser.
And as far as the "conspiracy theorists".....I think not. All I'm trying to prove is that the "ring" that you see is not a "Rem-o" or Ritchie Ring, since they didn't exist yet. Shadow, reflection or sticker, no matter what it really was, I know it ain't no muffle ring! So can we get past this pointless argument now please?
Its been proven thousands of times on this forum and elsewhere, that Bonham used felt strips behind his bass drum heads and nothing else. Myself and a couple of others answered the poster's original question about how to control it, and they never answered back how they had their kit miced up. In a recording situation, that makes a big difference in trying to capture a "live" sounding bass drum. If they don't like that sound, then maybe the "Bonham" sound isn't what they really are looking for. And that my friends was the real point behind the post.

I have no idea why you seem to be angry about this? That is always counter productive to a good conversation. I'll step out of the conversation at this point.

My personal opinion is they are all shadows. Am I correct, maybe, probably not. That's why it's an opinion.
Did Zep play Area 51...DUH? Last year they had Elvis warm up for them.
Ok, so we all agree on what it isn't....a muffle ring like a "ritchie-ring" or a "Rem-O". What we can't seem to agree on is to what it actually is.....does it really matter at this point?? NOOOO!!!! LoLoLoLoLoLoLoLo

When you look down a tube, perspective relation makes the other end look smaller, so I think we are seeing the lighter part through the frosted front head as environmental, and the "darker" ring is just the non-light of the "tube".
