Questions and diary about restuaration of my LA Camco Last viewed: 1 hour ago

I need help, and advice. I have 2 problems so far...

1- Internal damper is making buzz-noise when I am hit toms. Its that "pillow" thats touch heads, it´s not sitting "hard" on the wire as it should.

Its makeing me iritated. If I screw on damper, so it touch hard againt the heads, than buzz desiperd. But then I loose tone from drums.

What to do?

To remove damper?

To take away only that "plillow"?

2- Hoop to fllortom seems to be a little bit bigger than shell. Its difficult to put head on the center, and hoop excaktly in the middle over the heads. If I move it, just a few mm, then hoope do not " take" heads, when I am tuning.

Twice, I tuned, smash rimshot on the tom, and hoop "move" a little bit, and head get un-tuned at the moment. See picture abowe.

Is Camcos hoops smaller that ordinary?

Can I have 17, 5" tom?????

What to do?

I'm not sure about your hoops but they don't look original to me as there is a lot of splay going on with those hoops on your drums (the tension rods are toeing out). Those may not be American sized hoops. Also the floor tom legs are not original as the originals have notches and the legs flare out at the bottom.

As for the tone controls, that's what they do, they RATTLE! Most people take them off. If you do, just remember where they are as they are worth their weight in gold.

Yes, floortome is not original, I toke them from my Psycho Red Ludwig to take a shot Storm Trooper . I try to get som new ( there is some on ebay - but 3 for 150$ + shipping to sewden, ( and I need 4 legs ) ....Eye Ball, No I will buy legs in the future, but not for that prive, I rather wait 10 years.

You have right about tensionrods toening out... I will take away heads an messure, something is crazy there. But, It should not look like tahat, and bee som much space between shell and hoops as on the picture?

About damper, I think I well remove them, I do not like att all rattle sound they make.

But did they do it all the time - even when they were new?

The ones on my Oaklawn kit don't rattle but I think I just got lucky. Most of the ones I've seen rattle.

Those hoops should fit better than that. I suspect they were lost at some point and perhaps metric hoops were used to replace the originals. I'm just guessing but I've never seen rods splay that bad on an L.A. Camco drum before. BTW the lugs were made to compensate for the undersized shells to prevent rod splay.

That was my idea too, that hoop was replaced. And all hoops om the other toms are sitting well, without having that problem. As camco shells are undersized, I was thinkking that Camco should even have a undersized hoops.

Is any one able to messure on 18" Camco hoop, so I can compare to mine? If Camcos hopes are smaller, than I must try to fint another on Ebay, what can take taime, and be expensive. So before that, I would like to be a shure thats what to do.

Is tehere another drums too, who used undersized hoops, than Camco?

About damper, again:

Is any one know a easy way to get them silent without removing them?

Is there some screw to tighten, can I add some glue or simmilar stuff on some part to made pillow sitting tighter? It worth to try some recpt, if there is any, before removing them.

No, the hoops are not undersized. The head is meant to float more on that shell than normal. They used a generic hoop by that point so there is nothing special about L.A. Camco hoops.

Just a moment...

Some says that Camco hoops were undersized to fit theis underisized shell.

But you says those was oridenary hoops, not at all smaller then usualy hoops?

Not as far as I know. I bought an L.A. kit but it was just the shells. I outfitted it with generic hoops and they all worked fine with no splay.

But L.A. era Camco drums are not my thing. I collect Oaklawn Camco drums and George Way drums. The only L.A. Camco drum I have in my collection is a 5x14 snare drum in Stradivarius finish w/ gold hardware.
