Thought I had a Radio King snare...BOY,WAS I WRONG! Last viewed: 1 hour ago

From K.O.

Generally only the Radio King models had the snare bridges (or whatever you call them) but in later years Slingerland wasn't necessarily "married" to using the solid maple shell exclusively for these models despite what the catalog said. There were "student" versions in the catalogs with three ply shells but they lacked the bridges. Very easy to imagine a special order version of one of those student models with the bridges added and/or a regular RK being built with a standard 3 ply shell. My guess is those hoops are modern stick saver imports. I bought some for a vintage Slingy snare (metal shell) and the splay was bad enough that I couldn't use them.

I agree with K.O. Hoops are not original, hence the splay. Badge and hardware layout date drum to '59 or '60. Slingerland was no longer using the "Radio King" name for it's top line drums during this era. As K.O. said It could be called a Gene Krupa model with a 3-ply shell or a Student Radio King with bridges and tone control. Most likely value is not that of typical Radio Kings.

Isn`t that the only strainer that was called the Radio King Strainer ?

I have to take his word it`s three ply because I don`t see three ply anything.

Yes, the three point strainer was called the Radio King strainer. Take a close look at the catalog page you posted earlier, none of the drums are referred to as "Radio King".

The mahogany interior makes this a 3-ply drum unless it is a '41 or earlier shell. Badge, hardware, layout and markings are consistent with late 50's-early 60's. One ply shells from this era are maple. Picture could be better.

Yes the pic could be better. That exact page one year earlier has all those as Radio Kings. I look at it like the BB effect, the early De-Lux are the real $$$$ BB`s but not labeled BB.

I have no issue with any of those four being called Radio Kings.

I guess the engraved hoop should apply. Because of that splay, I think it may have had them.

Do you have the '58 catalog? If not you are actually looking at the same page 4 years earlier.

One of the four drums you would like to call a Radio King is a Hollywood Ace. Perhaps we should just call everything Slingerland ever made a Radio King. This site and the VDG are the greatest. The real info is here for everyone if you care to look.

Highly doubtful on engraved hoops. Last engraved hoops are around '56-'57. Some of the fine details of the strainer suggest this drum is a 1960. Most likely the Gene Krupa model. These came with stick saver hoops.

The sticksavers that are on this drum are not Slingerland Oem ,These are aftermarket stick savers, that is the cause of the splay !

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

The 55 cat ten lug with the clamshell has these profile hoops engraved.

I see no engravings on the 59 cat models with the same type hoops.

Not knowing much about Slingy hoop profiles, I figured someone changed out stick choppers on this one.

I`ve always thought the Ace to be a RK variant.

This one has the chicago badge.

The 51 cat has scription that reads, "the Hollywood Ace Radio King Model", Which is why I consider an Ace a Radio King.
