Picked up a old engraved Ludwig Brass snare..... Last viewed: 5 minutes ago

From Mr.Lud

Okay so I read what you said earlier again and it makes sense. However, what you just said now confuses me. So if they were N.E. and not N.W. that would mean the head could be fake possibly or just a mix-up? The head unquestionably is N.W. I myself have quite a odd address that isn't even to the road I live on. I don't go to grand rapids much besides on business and I've never been downtown.

Monroe runs north/south....

Knapps was on the west side of the street...so it was NW...(The north part means it is north of Fulton St)

If you cross the street...it becomes NE....

I wouldn't gig with the drum, drumming is a hobby and not a career for me. It would be used in the living room and then either shown off/put in a case. In fact right now is the most it will probably ever be seen.

Anyways thanks for the recommendation on the wires. I will go with that. Does anyone know of any drum heads with the plastic rings? Calf would be fun to mess with but I don't really want them.

If the heads aren't ripped don't change them. Metal on the head hoop can scratch the shell and, it looks much better with the original/calfskin heads. The drum shows some wear on the tubes and seams and may not "quite" be a 4K drum imo. Black Beauty prices haven't moved much in 10-15 years except for mint stuff.

Great advice, Bun. If you want to use a modern head, you could get a Remo FiberSkyn and get some type of thin cloth that looks like calfskin. Cut a piece that just covers up the metal head hoop and attach it to head (i.e. rubber cement). Once it's in place and the hoop, clips and tension rods are installed, no one will be able to tell. It seems like a lot of work, but you'll be protecting the shell from scratches and using a modern head at the same time. Also, as someone else mentioned, be careful with the original clips. Don't put too much tension on the heads or the clips might snap.

I can't wait to see the pictures after the clean up.

Also, the Aquarian Vintage American heads are slightly oversized. You could get a batter and snare side head that wouldn't scuff up the shell since they are slightly larger.

Or you could just sell the drum to me and I'll take care of it! flower

They should. I got a snare side head for my 20's Luddy and it fit great. They aren't oversized by a whole bunch.

I have the Aquarian Modern Vintage heads on the way and I am thinking about the puresound "equalizer" snares. Only reason is because they are dirt cheap and people say you can hear the tone of the drum more...ie they aren't overpowering.

Anyone have any thoughts on that? If it helps I have a lot of 3 in 1 oil and a ton of cotton rags ready to go ;)
