Kook-I agree 100% with your feelings towards the Beatles. I have been on record on this site dubbing them the original boy band, many times. The issue is though, regardless whether they were the first, of many, cookie-cutter music-biz acts, they sold a boatload of records and millions and millions of people worship them, still to this day. Therefore, they are very influential, and if you asked every person on this planet who Dennis Wilson was, you would be lucky to get 1 out of 10. If you asked them who Ringo Starr was, you would definitely get 2 or 3 out of ten. Statuscymbal can check my stats here........ Another thing I have learned on this site. You will never convince anyone about anything negative about the Beatles. Show them the pictures of the 10 year old girls crying when they were singing, and it will be answered as their music being sooooo deep. Recite some of their masterful lyrics like "she loves you yeah yeah yeah, does she love you yeah yeah yeah, are you sure she loves you yeah yeah yeah, does she still love you? yeah yeah yeah, I think she may love you yeah yeah yeah, and those will be answered with simplicity is the highest form of art. I am saying I have travelled your road and the membership here are Beatles fanatics and you can't win this argument on VDF. With the Beatle worship that exists in general, you would have a hard time winning the argument on Pearl or any other rock based site because somehow, liking the Beatles is seen as being "vintage-cool" or something. I don't get it, but I respect it all the same. Those tambourine bangin', soup-bowl-haircut-sportin', yellow-submarine lyric writin' Brits have garnered a following that rivals any public figure in the history or recorded history.

I look at it this way,

A band is entertainment, appearance and skill. With that, you aim at the same goal that every other band has. (you can tell right away a letter "A" when the people start to move) That goal is to make people return to, or purchase your work. The Beatles reached that goal more times, (even dead) than any other band of their time.

So the $200,000 drag car got wooped by the $30,000 car over and over again because no matter how much you spend on the car, the objective is to cross the finish line first. So to speak.

"Conformist mentality"? We are explaining who and why somebody inspired us to play drums. I don't know how to respond to such hyperbole. "Too scared to think for themselves"? Are you trolling? Such brave thinkers to think that the Beach Boys were so radical. Typical American way of life? The Beatles are enormously popular around this whole world.

What are you accomplishing with your non-conformist, brave thinking, atypical being? Maybe you are wrong.

While I have enjoyed this in kind of a "I have to stop and look at the car crash" mentality I will have to add this in all seriousness.

I was pretty engrossed in music from a fairly young age. I went through high schooling 78-81. I started playing professionally at 15 playing in a wide variety of live ensembles from jazz piano bar, big band, rock, fusion, country, orchestral you name it and was playing college pit orchestras by the time I was in seventh grade. I say that not to say "wow, look at me" but only to point out that I was really involved with music at that time. I should also point out that I am not one to "follow the crowd" in any way shape or form as my friends and family would be quick to tell you.

Through that period, I didn't really care all that much for the Beatles. Towards the end of my high school career and into my college years, several friends kept prompting me to pay more than a cursory listen to them. At some point I started to listen more closely and to a wider spectrum of their recordings. Slowly but surely I began to recognize their brilliance and now have a much keener understanding as to why their music has endured. On the one hand you have "She Loves You" (keep in mind the time period before being too critical) and the other hand you have songs like "Norwegian Wood", "The Long and Winding Road", etc. They cut broad, genre-spanning material that touched a wide variety of topics from the teenage exuberance, teenage angst, pure fantasy, social and political awareness, and on and on. Music that has obviously spanned generations in a way that no other group has or will for that matter. Certainly George Martin had a an important hand in helping them to uncover those gems, but without John, Paul, George, and Ringo, there would have been no magic. And without John, Paul, George and Ringo, George Martin would most likely be yet another producer that no one had heard of.

You don't have to like the Beatles, I get that. But to dismiss them as mediocre or as "just another band" is grossly misunderstanding their talent, their wit, their song writing abilities, their performance abilities, and their impact on western culture for half a century.

The Beach Boys.....not even close. Sorry. It doesn't mean they are not good or that Brian Wilson isn't gifted, but not even close.

UOnce again I dunno who or what 'trolling' comes into the pictures because I reiterate that Ive never undermined the beatles but I feel really sorry for anyone that puts the beatles on a pedastal over the beach boys cuz thats prevalent ignorance, as asinine as can be....opinion or not the beach boys took what chuck berry started and revolutionized the industry, and then the following decade the ramones came along and revitalized what good rock was hence punkrock... Its easy for someone that doesnt get it to name call or skew a synopsis but thats not would Id wanna do//

Ringo never had the musical ability to pull of a solo masterpiece like dennis Pacific ocean blue dennis wilson is by far a better composer arranger and drummer. Everyone forgets that the beatles had three very strong song writers and the beach boys had one! So in short the beach boys are far more talented. I am an american and on the 4th of july i watch fire works eat hotdogs and crank the beach boys! I cringe when i hear any british invasion band on that day.

Drumhack youre correct, its a conformist mentality, people that are too scared to think for themselves, typical american way of life.

Ehhhh, I think it is more of (I am assuming here....) us being a generation or two away from the average active member on here. I was born in the seventies. Lots of these cats were alive when the Beatles were actually playing live, so they got to experience the British Invasion. The closest we came to that was watching the Austin Powers series.....Laughing H That is also probably why most of them have never been able to fully appreciate, nor recognize, why hair metal and Gun's and Roses are the best music of all time. They were born too early!!! Laughing HLaughing HLaughing H

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
