12x20 bass drums

John: I could sure tell how it could ruin the evening, and make the bass player hate you. Like I said, I was just goofing of with the X7 in my office, by myself and could tell something was wrong. Having to carry a back beat with that thing would be a chore. Maybe they work better miked, no clue. At any rate, others can suss out the stuff with the beer can kits. I like mine in a bottle anyway! :)

You guys have me thinking. Some time back I picked up a 12 or 10 by 24ish Ludwig Tango model bass drum from the mid 20's. Kinda neat, it was Ludwig's low end offering. Thin mahogany shell with eight single tension rods. Fair condition. The heads are toast (calf) and its not standard sized or badged. I figure Ludwig imported them from Europe, since it's not standard sized. Could very well be wrong about that, it's only my opinion with nothing to back it up. However, I bet that thing would make a killer bass in a set like yours. I just might try that when I finish the twenty thousand or so other projects I need to finish first! lol

Thanks for the compliments guys. I am thrilled it turned out well and the kit sounds really good. Little 12"x22" doesn't break your back either. Pretty light. I have to use a Gilbralter bass drum anchor on the reso bottom hoop. If anyone runs across a wood Slingerland snare with the hardware I could save and rewrap to match my kit let me know please.

Hey Fish, not to derail the thread, but one of my favorite modern drummers is Stanton Moore. Stanton has an odd two bass drum set-up. He uses a 20" as the main bass drum and then off to the right of the kit (that big red one off to the lower-left of the screen,) he has an antique 26" tuned low and boomy. He flips a double-pedal around the other way so that all he has to do to activate the boomer is move his foot over to the right a little and switch pedals. He'll switch from using the 20" to the 26" in the middle of a groove and when that big bass drum comes in, man does it ever open up the sound of the entire kit. Find a way to assemble and use the one you have. Check out this example. Listen as he plays, all of a sudden you'll hear the sound open up and get real BIG. It's the switch over to the 26" that does it. Enjoy… food for thought!

I have a 10"x26" Stainless marching bass I have been messing with. I love it! Super punchy, but still has big boom. Nice in tight spaces also.

That bugger must be LOUD too! A real BOOMER! Anything 24" or over can be made to sound like thunder.

John; Wow... we need to talk! I've met Mr. Moore at one of the clinics at Bentley's Drums. Since Dana (Bentley) is a friend, I got to hang out and yak with Mr. Moore for a bit. A very interesting, and EXTREMELY talented fellow.

Damn you, Vinny! I got enough project kits. Why do you torture me this way? LOL

Just wanted to say: I spoke with Fishwaltz (Craig) on the phone today and it was a hoot getting a chance to meet and talk with him. Great guy, bright, with a keen sense of humor.

It was fun meeting you 'live' Craig! We'll have to do it again. Looking forward to it.
