Was this size a special order in the old days or were there companies offering it with the 14" as well??...Could be more of a European thing than a North AmericanHelp2

No it was a standard size by the american companies. I have had both Ludwig and slingerland bass drums in this size.

Yes!, they aren't my cup of tea, but they are good drums.

I've got a Camco 20" x 12" and it's amazing. Lots of attack. Makes me think the reasoning behind very deep bass drums is essentially wrong. My main bass drum these days. Also super easy to pack, carry, etc, etc

I repurposed a Stainless steel 18x12 marching tom into a bass. Boom for days.

Have an 18" x 12" as well. Love it too and there's a surprising difference between a 20" and 18" - more than I would have thought.

Ludwig had a 12x22 in the new yorker kit and also a 12x20 in the hobby outfit.

I've got a 12x20 Blaemire bass drum, and it's the punchiest little sucker.
