Is this why we started to play the drums???????

Loading...

Here you go......check this picture out from I'm guessing from the early to mid 40's.

The man with the practice pad surounded by the bevy of young girls was a classmate of my Dad and THE local drum teacher by the name of Bob Varney.

What a cool way to get the chicks a practice pad at the beach!

Bob used to tell the story that he saw Gene Krupa around 1935-36'ish and was blow away by Gene's showmanship and inspired him to play.

Bob went on to play with Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton, Jimmy McPartland, Mal Hallet....the list goes on.

John (Purdie Shuffle) got me started with his tribute to Gene (which was GREAT) to scour YouTube to see if I could find some footage of Bob, and low and behold I found him with Kenton doing a tune called "Southern Scandal". He did an original episode of the lost Honeymooner's with Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey on a live New Years Show.

I wasnt smart enough to want to play the drums as a kid but my dear friend was fortunate to study with Bob for many years and became an amazing player thanks to Bob and the great Alan Dawson.

Ahh, to be around back then!!

Oh my God that photo is GREAT!!

Where was Bob Varney from?

The name sounded familiar, but as it turns out, according to Google, there's a Massachusetts senator with the same name.

DOH

Hey Richie!

Bob was from Milford, MA and came off the road pretty much in the middle to late 50's.

He then worked mostly in the Boston area doing society gigs and would work with some big name acts. One good story was when he was back in the Boston area and took a gig downtown at The Latin Quarter with a struggling singer who was a little down on his luck. This singer was waiting for good news from Hollywood from a screen test................??????????

Some of the young memebers won't remember preformers like Sergio Franchi, Nina Simone, Steve Lawrence & Edie Gorme', The Maguire Sisters ect.

Oh BTW the singer was Ol' Blue Eyes Francis Albert Sinatra, he said he couldn't have been more pleasant and the movie screen test was for From Here To Eternity for which he won an Academy Award.

"And that's the rest of the story......."

It's one of the big reasons why I started playing! I was paying attention when I saw how girls screamed for some artists. I thought to myself as I watched the performers, "Now, that's what I want to do!"

John

Too many great drums to list here!

That's crazy!!!

So Bob Varney is a local (to me) guy!

I knew I associated the name with drums for some reason...but still have no idea why.

One of these days, my winter project is going to be researching the "Working" local drummers of the jazz scene.

As much as I'd like to think I'd have girls clamoring around if I brought my practice pad to the beach, I'm sure this is image is much more accurate:

Richie,

Plus every Sunday on WBZ TV you'd see Bob as the drummer on Community Auditions. I forgot to add that. Remember "Star of The Day"?

That's a great photo!! Looks like everybody's havin' a swinging time Cool1
