since i have the 3" wide tape, i just rolled out a length of it, laid the strips down side my side and then used an exacto knife to trim off the excess.

i like to leave a little bit of an exposed spot on the ends of each piece when i apply the tape to the inlays, and then glue the very ends of the overlaps with superglue. just make sure to mask off EVERYTHING around that spot when you glue because superglue has a way of getting all over the place.

so you apply the tape to the inlay then lay it in the slot?
do you recommend that other than taping the slot and applying the inlay to that ?
i apply the tape to the inlay wrap first. it's easier to trim to the width of the strip than it is to trim to the width of the groove.
edit: it just dawned on me that you are probably doing a 1/2" inlay. since the tape is available in 1/2", it's probably easier to place the tape in the groove first.
As far as using glue, I use E6000/Goop:

These are two different brands, but it's the exact same adhesive. I use it on everything. It's like a heavy duty silicon, that stays live, doesn't get brittle. It's easy to clean off the excess, even after it dries. It has never failed me in any application. I've even used it to re-glue a rear view mirror.

its a 3/4" Gretsch round badge inlay and I am using 1/2" tape
it makes sense to me to put the tape on the inlay then just place it
The name of the tape that i used at the two drum shop's and now at mine shop is TESA tape. Its made in charlotte,N.C. by TESA Tape Co....Mikey
Update on glueing down a seam lift on a 77 era Rogers floor tom useing ELmers white glue. Didn't hold. Worked fine for my inlay's on wood.
The Elmers did hold on my wrap I got from Sam Bernard. This old silver wrap didn't hold with crazy glue either. . Going to scrape out the Elmers and try something else. Maybe that Goop.
