Rogers Big R CL score

Loading...

Congrats on a great score of great drums.

Five ply keller maple shells.

Year of manufacture: 1977

Cracks: Hairlines are very common with this wrap. I have them as well.

Tom Post: Two Allen Hex set screws were used to secure the triple mount to the post. Two each drum key set screws were supplied for the tom arm positions, as well as two for the center position which originally would have had a white plastic cap. The cymbal holder tube in there now does not look to be Rogers, although if it works and you are happy with it, who cares. It might be more comfortable as a set up to turn that post mount around 180 degrees, and let the tom arms follow the same angle as the mount.

Bass Drum Hoops: Either the silver tape inlay is missing or they are not original Rogers. However, they do look good. In 2001, I swapped out my original Rogers hoops, which were in very good condition, in favor of 2" Natural Maple hoops. I do think the solid black you have look excellent on the drums.

Sound... You are going to love these drums. They are rock solid and sound good. If you perchance do have some issues with the tom arms causing some choking, or even echoing and sound transfer when you smack the bass drum, a few cotton balls jammed into the hollow tom arm tube should do the trick. Moving the drums down slightly on the mount might help also.

I have two sets in this color, my original drumset, 1977 non catalogue Super Londoner V, which originally was a 24, 13, 14, with a 15 added, and an 18 floor tom. I have had those since 1979. They are now a 24, 13, 16, 18. My wraps have the same hairline issues, and perhaps someday, I will address that with a rewrap or possibly even a complete redo in matched color automotive paint. The other set is a standard Londoner V, XP8 drums.

Your set is indeed a Londoner V.

Congrats to you.

Here is the tom moumts JC. I need a couple of the little tension rod headed screws and outside that I think for the pieces I have it is all there. Well the top cymbal part but I have one that will fit there. If thats what it is.

I need to get a opinion on the iside of the shell if this was possibly a rewrap?

The grommet looks a little funny. Will post a pic later.

thanks Ploughman. Just saw your post. So you think they are 1977? They have a D in front of the number. D708361. The bearing edges look great on these. I just opened up the 12" tom. What do you think there worth? I think I am going to keep them so the other stuff must go!

I guess that rod goes down in the middle. That's why those two screws are there to keep it from turning or moving. I will see if it works for me as far as cymbal placement and if not remove it and get a cap like Plowman was talking about.

I am just wondering why the inside of the grommet doesn't go all the way out and mushroom? Is that how they are? IT is secure.

Here is a pic of XP8 drums in that color, you can see the center support post and how it extends from the mount through to the other side of the drum. The Tom Mount Post fits into this on the bass drum mount. The center support gives great strength to the shell, allowing toms to sit on the bass drum, and be fully supported. At the bottom of the shell is a screw/nut/with rubber grommet the center post lands into. This prevents the weight of the toms mounted on the bass drum from swinging back and forth. The bass drum mount with center post is not something that should be removed from the drum...if you use a regular tom mount on the bass drum in place of this center post support mount, you will damage your shell. These pieces are designed to work together, and make your toms mounted on the bass drum rock solid.

Great stuff Ploughman. I was definately going to leave that in. Where the seams have lifted a little on one tom and the floor tom, the wrap has receded about 1/8 inch and there is a brown line of glue. I had the same thing on some Ludwigs I fixed up but it took me a while to scrub that off. I think I used Acetone. Wonder if that will hurt this wrap. I am just thinking of foregoing that for now and clean all the hardware and the shells and try to have them ready to try out on a couple gigs this Sat. & Sun afternoon.

The lugs and hardware are in really good shape and should be fine after a soaking in some Dawn concoction. If anyone is interested in those cymbals let me know, There nice.

13" new beats?

I might be interested in those!

I love my 14's (but I play them upside down) and I've been thinking about a remote hat...Walking

Let me know!

By the way, until this post I had not considered big R rogers before... I might keep my eyes peeled rather than saving for ever for script badge drums...

Your right Ploughman. I now remember some metallic red drums I started to use acetone on and it started to take a little red of. I immediately stopped.

I was not remembering correctly. I think I used goo gone on the Ludwigs but I had decided to let it go on these.
