I was wondering why someone replaced the original tom mounts on my Fibes chrome over fiberglass, however now that I recently accuired an acrylic fibes set with the original tom mounts I know why they were replaced on my other set. I understand you seriously devalue the kit, however I'm having a hard time getting these toms to stay in place, this plastic ball they designed does not work in my opinion. I even had to order a special rachet type drum key because you can't get a standard key to access the lugs on the mounts and toms, frustrating.
Fibes tom mounts (errrrrrrr)

I will be restoring a Fibe kit soon with those mounts. It will be interesting to see if I have the same trouble ( hope not) with mine. Mabye someone will chime in with some advice to help the tom stay in place. I attached a pic to make sure we are talking about the same thing here.

Yep, those are the ones, you will see once you try to mount these, you'll need a ratchet key, the lugs are in a weird spot, which is why maybe I cant really tighten them to stay. are you the one putting on real steel wrap on those> ? how far are you?

Yes, I am the one you are thinking of. I finally got the adhesive just need time to do it. I hope to get the steel glued on in the next few days. I will tell everyone about it in my "restoring Fibes drums" thread.

Yeah, those white ball mounts do'nt grip very well cause most of them have a smooth surface. I had the same problem. Got lucky though by finding some ball mounts that had a rougher surface, kinda like the surface on an orange, they gripped better.
Before I got those, I considered "roughing" up the smooth surface w/ sandpaper or wrapping them w/ grip tape, the kind that goes on the top of skateboards. Might work.

So right on these mounts. This is a few ways i have fixed this problem. On the balls as you know they are in two pieces.I have glued them together..I have also rough-up the outside of the ball.I have also add one washer to the key rod on the mount.I have also used alittle duck tape on the tom arms....Mikey
I have the same problem with my Fibes kit. IMO allot of the problem has to do with the weight of the drum more than the design of the mount. The Fibes mounts, tho not a good design, would work better if the drums weren't so dam heavy. I have both the single and double mount the single works ok but forget the double it doesn't work worth a dam. My solution to the whole problem was to switch to suspension mounts that left the drum untouched and in original condition.
Mine works just fine, never had a problem with it. That's a 13" fiberglass tom hanging over a 24" bass drum.

DOLfan, the reason yours work fine is becuase you have a single tom, like I said before, when you have the dual toms, for one thing you cant even get a standard drum key in between the two toms to tighten them, (which is why I ordered a rachet drum key)
I like the idea of "roughing" up the ball, but I'd have to look and see how to remove it, hopfeully its not a big deal. duck tape in the tom arm>? hmm, might work to.
Now I understand why on my other Fibes kit they put pearl mounts on it, these mothers are fricken heavy @*&%$ drums. That chome steel over fiberglass would never hold with those original mounts.

Here is a better pic of the pearl mounts, the way I hit, its the only way this set could be my players kits, may have lost value with these mounts, but I cant beat the sound I get out of this set. I plan on keeping my acyrilic fibes set original however
