Aquarian vintage heads - Modern or American Last viewed: 11 hours ago

Does anyone know the thickness difference between the Medium and Thin weights of these heads? Is it like Ambassadors (10 mil) and Diplomats (7.5 mil)?

Aquarian's website doesn't say. I just threw away an Aquarian Products catalog a few weeks ago, but I think I've got another 2 or 3 somewhere. I'll see if I can find one - maybe the thicknesses are listed in there - and let you know.

Knowing that the Super-2 head is one 5-mil ply and one 7-mil ply (I was told this by Roy Burns), I would think that the thin would be a 7 mil. I don't think they would do a 7 and a 7.5, but I certainly can't be sure of that. But, I think you're basically right on that. I'll see if I can't find out for sure, though.

Yeah...I checked the Aquarian site and didn't find the information, either. I also had an Aquarian catalog but can't find it. I guess I'll just have to order one of each and do some comparisons. In general, I think Aquarian has thicker heads than Remo. Thanks for the reply, Slinger!

You're welcome! I believe I've got an Aquarian catalog from some years back that mentioned the thicknesses of some heads - I tend to be a packrat when it comes to catalogs and such, but my wife always begs me to throw them away when they're beyond a year or two old. But I have some put up somewhere I'm sure. Or, I may be remembering that the website used to mention that. One way or the other I remember reading that the old Double Thin heads were 7-mil top and 5-mil bottom - they were my favorites for a while - but I can't even find that info by doing a Google search now. I don't have a clue as to why they would quit posting that info. I tried to call them earlier and kept getting their voicemails. Roy Burns is usually quick to answer the phone, but I guess his AR and sales guys aren't, or they're just busy. I didn't try to get him because he's got much bigger fish to fry, I'm sure. If I can't find it, I'll keep trying to get somebody at Aquarian to pick up the phone and I'll tell them to put that info back in the descriptions of their heads after I get them to tell me what the thicknesses of the heads are. ;)

VERY NICE!!! My most desired kit! The holy grail of drums in my book!

Thanks, SlingerLynn! I really love the kit. It's been a very time consuming process, but I'm disassembling EVERY PART, cleaning, polishing, new wool felt in the lugs, etc. It would have been done weeks ago but for loads of work in the way.

I actually worked so hard polishing the lugs on just that rack tom alone that I gave myself a moderate case of carpal tunnel.Hurting I've backed off and don't spend hours hand polishing any more, which is leading me to pursue another manner of polishing...maybe on a variable speed buffer or wheel.

It's getting there...will post pictures when complete.

That's the way to do it. Like my grandfather and dad always told me, "If you're gonna do it, do it right." I sometimes take that a few steps further, which drives my wife crazy, but I make sure it's done right.

I hope your wife is recovering and your kids are well and you get time to finish the job in the not-too-distant future. I think you're onto something with the variable speed buffer. I think a slow speed setting would work real nice with a soft wheel. I've thought about using my rotary tool, but it's WAY too fast.

Good luck! Please post pics as you go.

I looked everywhere! I guess I threw them all away. I'll see if I can get someone at Aquarian to answer the phone today and find out. I'm curious now...and curious as to why in the world they would not have that info on the website!

Haven't located my catalog either, but I don't think I've been looking as hard as you have! I might be moving next month, so if I have it, I'm sure it'll turn up. Like you, I am stumped as to why Aquarian would stop posting that info...guys like us wanna know!

Exactly! Why not post the important info!? Anyway, if yours is still in the house, I'm sure you'll find it during the move.

Hey Fellas...I was just shopping on Amazon.com looking for some American vintage heads and it lists the Mediums as 10 mil and the Thins as 7 mil. Seems pretty accurate if you ask me! Maybe we found our answer...

This has been on my mind for the last few days. I haven't been able to get someone at Aquarian to answer the 2 or 3 times I've called since. That sounds right, though. Thank you for sharing that! If I think about it, I'll try Aquarian again and confirm that with them.
