After Reading About The Slingerland Chrome-wrapped Drums Found

In A Basement, I Got To Thinking About The Show American Pickers.

If You Watch Closely On Some Of Their Picks, You See An Occasional

1-2 Drums As The Guys Are Looking For Other Items To Purchase.

It Makes One Wonder How Many Orphan Drums And/or Sets Are On

Picks These Guys Go On. I've Been Tempted To Request That Frank

And Mike Seek-out Drums In Their Future Picks??? Worth Considering.

Hey, I've noticed the few times a drum has shown up on the show, too.

Also remember an episode of Pawn Stars when they went to some guy's house to see a vintage set of Slingerlands...

BUT -- I have mixed feelings/concerns when it comes to these guys getting into vintage drums. Would it help our "hobby/industry," or just make people that have this stuff want more for what they have?

It's interesting to note that both shows have guitars show up much more often. I've always thought that's because knowing vintage drums takes a "special" person and is not nearly as easy for "antique generalists" to get involved in.

Just thinking "out loud" and ramblin', I guess...

HA! I'm a special person! I've nearly controlled my spontaneous drooling!

The best thing about those Slingy's that were on Pawn Stars was they didn't sell. The seller wanted a gob for 'em, and was offered much less. Most of the stuff I've seen get passed over on American Pickers was some old moldy orphan bass drums. The thing you don't want happening, like Bill said, is some 'expert' putting a value of $1000.00 on a 'rare' vintage 'First Act' kit.

I watch that all the time and also "Storage War's" waiting for someone to find that mint cased up vintage 'Camco" set, or Cane and Tophat kit. I did see one guy find a Ludwig set and there were actually some other vintage WMP orphans they did not even address. He took them to Stewert Copelands house of "The Police" and he valued them for him. It was a more recent Ludwig kit worth about $1000.00 but he did tell the guy, hey, I will give you $40 cash right now for that cymbal and was pointing to a ride and after the deal he said it was the holy grail of ride cymbals and he had been looking for one for years. He never mentiond brand or anything but I think it was a istanbul k.

I think people in the industry, who make their living buying/selling the contents of storage lockers, or pickers. will tell you that these programs have ruined their business. The guys who work storage lockers suddenly find themselves competing with crowds of amateurs who inflate prices beyond reason.

I don't know about you, but I hope they never stop or pick up an old drum and discuss value on-air. The very next day, every wahoo with a dollar and a dream of avarice will become your new competition in the marketplace. Trust me, they won't have the same values and sensitivity we have for the instrument. You think a lot of great old drums are being chopped apart for profit now... wait till the word gets out.

Mums the word!

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I've noticed it also. There was a place in RI that Frank and Mike picked that had a bunch of old drums. I just kept counting the different drums in the background throughout the segment. Since we are in the general area I told my wife that I wished I knew where that pick was located so I could rescue the drums. Hopefully someone saw the show and was able to get these drums to those who appreciate it.

I have wondered how these shows have affected business for those who have been at it for years. There is also another show on some cable channel with these 2 guys buying lockers and it just seems to good to be true the stuff they find. and you know the saying about that. wonder if some of this stuff is rigged to tell you the truth.

they keep it down low i saw a episode where they were jamming on a old set of luddys and he did not know diddly, what a waste, they sold them to a collector

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I don't think these shows are rigged. They just show the good picks and good storage lockers because that's what's interesting and exciting. Think of what the ratings would be like if everything they found was crappy and they lost money! I agree with everyone about how these shows are probably killing all the guys who made their living this way, and it will likely kill our hobby if these guys have a great drum haul, so mum's the word for me too!
