Well there you go very nice sweet deal!

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

I think another thing to remember about the "Guitar As Fetish Object" is getting permission from The Boss.

Say I'm a henpecked dentist living in a darn nice place in the 'burbs. If I want to buy 10 vintage guitars I can't play and hang them up on the wall of the spare bedroom left after little Timmy went off to school, the wife might roll her eyes and grumble about wasting money, but it's not really a big deal. They're easy to store/hide, and everybody can appreciate a neato old guitar.

But if I buy 10 vintage drum kits that only cost 20% those guitars did and set them all up in the basement, the hammer would fall so hard and fast I would be sobbing in a puddle of my own urine in a matter of seconds. The Boss would have absolutely none of that.

Now, my wife is a pretty cool lady, and she's used to this nonsense. I also play everything I have, however poorly. But don't underestimate the fury of the average inconvenienced hausfrau.

It is amazing watching these guys walk or climb over old drums. It may be a good thing. It keeps the experts from driving up the prices and they leave the drums for real collectors to make a deal on.

I'd live to find some guy with a barn or a house full of old drums

Stewart called it a turkish cymbal,it looked like a 20" and sounded like a K to me,even if it was a current K it would have been worth 200.00,and he gave him 40.00? I have no idea what a signed epic kit would be worth, maybe a little extra because there is a filmed record of him signing it?

On Auction hunters they found a few modded older sling drums with an 1940's K,it looked like a 20" no cracks or key holing, they took them to modern drum shop and they settled on 1700.00,300.00 for the drums 1400.00 for the K,they had one of the auction hunters "play" it ,and he could sort of play a beat and he just manhandled the cymbal so I could not really tell how good it sounded.

If you look closley at the cymbal Stewart is oooing and ahhhing over, you can clearly see a Zildjian ink stamp. So probably not a vintage K.......... makes you wonder.

I wouldn't tell them about vintage drum values. It's hard enough to afford some of these drums without every Johnny Come Lately asking a mint for em. There are still good deals to be had for those that would really enjoy using them as what they are, and I would much rather keep it that way. Too many people looking into vintage drum values and none of us will be able to afford them much longer...not that we all really can today!

The shows are 'setup' for sure. I was in a secondhand store here in Nanaimo BC just before Christmas. There was a lady I noticed out of the corner of my eye walking around with a clipboard but I just thought she was local and looking for stuff. I was talking with the owner and mentioned if he watched American or Canadian Pickers. He said yes. I mentioned it's funny when I see them crawl over a cool looking bass drum and maybe jump on an ole can of oil or something haha. I kind of knew something was up when he said said 'ya those pickers and gave a couple of looks at that lady in the store back and forth to me and her and kind of nodded to her. She walked over to me and interduced herself. She worked for Canadian Pickers....I think she said she was one of the Producers and she was 'scouting.' She gave me a couple of buttons and a nice post card featuring the Canadian guys and she signed it = advertising, but a nice gesture. Jake, the owner of the store (since closed down by the City of Nanaimo....that's another story) told me later that it's all set up. They tell you in advance what they want to buy and it's all 'story-boarded.'

Thought I'd share in case anyone is interested.

I do agree if they started to really focus on instruments including drums it may not be the best thing for folks like us.....the hobbiest collector. I mean that drum in the attic or on the table at a garage sale could suddenly be a highly sought after and very expensive item because of shows like these = if the "Pickers" turn to drums.

If they don't - then Vintage Drum folks that live close to where they see all this stash on tv can contact the people with the 'stash' and ask to have a look for drums! It may already be happening..............

From Mspartacus

I don't think these shows are rigged. They just show the good picks and good storage lockers because that's what's interesting and exciting. Think of what the ratings would be like if everything they found was crappy and they lost money! I agree with everyone about how these shows are probably killing all the guys who made their living this way, and it will likely kill our hobby if these guys have a great drum haul, so mum's the word for me too!
