Bill, Not many of these sets are around S/L made them in 1976..They did not sell at all,,I have only seen one complete five piece drum set with matching snare in 35+ years...Just a side note S/L also in 1976 made a clear vista set,also a set with a finish that looked like a coke soda can-{red and white}---Any of these sets are Rare to come by....Mikey

Yeah, I've got Rob Cook's "The Slingerland Book" and saw the pictures of the clear set and the Coke set. Wow, I guess they were trying anything back then. I've never seen the drums in person, though.

Hey, what about Slingerland's "Odessy" set (1983, I think). I'm only aware of it because of the book, too. There's one on Oklahoma City CL right now... $300. I know it can't be worth much as a "player," but as far as being rare... WOW. OKC's about 3 hours from me... what do you think?

As far as I know,Only one of these kits ever made it to Australia.. I had the opportunity to buy it off the floor at Drum City in Sydney. I decided against it because it was already "dusty" eg: gathering lint & stuff, just from sitting on display. I bought the same 51N in a two tone sparkle instead.Happy with my choice at the time.. I often wonder who bought it and the big question..( did it fade)??Cheers

And I wonder about the sound. Seems to me like any type of cloth covering would tend to dampen and hinder resonance.

Dust and mufflin' aside, it has crossed my mind to try & reproduce one...

Still have the two-tone sparkle, and pics? I have VERY FEW pics of my sets down through the years, and now kick myself for that...

Hi Bill,

Yes still have them, colour is probably as rare as the Denim.. I think they were trying all kinds of combos around that period..

Hi - I'm Jack.

I've had the denim covered Slingerland 5 piece since I bought used in 1979. I also have a promotional leaflet of Slingerlands for them from 1978, so I guess they were still made then. All five drums are denim covered, including the snare. And all five drums sound incredibly awesome! I did replace the heads with oil filled pinstripes about 20 years ago. Never require much tuning - maybe a tweak now and again and that's it! Had a set of black pearl Ludwigs before - no comparison. Where they are set up just now - there is a set of Tama Rock Stars. They are even worse than my Ludwigs were in comparison. The drum dimensions are Kick: 24x14; Snare: 14x5; Mounted Tom's: 13x8 and 14x9; Floor Tom: 18x16.

Welcome to the club.. thats the 51n Super Rock kit.. ony variation is the Snare, Must have been part of the special limited stuff.. as you have read.. they are pretty rare..

They may be rare but one thing for sure is, ugly. I guess I would use the air hose to clean them if I had them, that said, glad I dont have them. But it is interesting to find out all the different wraps over the years. Since joining this forum a year ago I am still seeing stuff I never knew existed.

I joined this forum two years ago this coming summer (and lurked for several months before I posted) and even though I've considered myself as a student of the drums of the 60s and 70s (since the 70s) I'm still learning something new all the time!

Another rare but ugly wrap Slingerland did was the "aztec" finishes of the mid 70s. They (SL) did seem to try several different wraps/finishes during that era. None of that stuff ever took off so I guess their marketing research left something to be desired, but you've sure got to give them credit for trying!
