Mystery Leedy Snare?

Hey guys, i normaly have to do with sonor drums. because i’m interested in jazz i got really interested in the drumsound of the 1960s at one point. but since i am german and i live in germany there are not to much USA drums over here. but a lot of sonor. so i got invested in the 1960s/70s german drums because a) my first drumset was 1970s sonor phonic and i loved it and b) because of their long history and them beeing really solid drums. i did find an interesting story. it is told that sonor had some conections to us companys in the early 1900s. first there is the tom mills drumstorry

( http://www.sonormuseum.com/genesis/genesis.html ) and in the 1930s, they offered a snare that looked really like a leedy modell (look at side 4 of the catalog the „favorit“-modell http://www.sonormuseum.com/catalogs/1932/index.html ).

long story short. why i post here can be seen in the pictures. last week is was on ebay, like always :D, and looked for drums the where listed as an „old drum“. I found one that looked like the tipical 6 lug wallhanger drum you would find for cheap. but i looked it up anyway and then i could see it. it looked like the drum had leedy lugs. of course i got interested in the drum and if you look at the pictures you can see why i think it is a real leedy snaredrum. i think it was a called a leedy professional modell (size is 6“x14“, 15,5cmx35,5cm). 2 of the lugs must have been borken at a point so somebody tried to „repair“ this snare by moving the lugs around. i hate it when somebody does stuff like that. it has actually a pair of ludwig hoops installed. i think they are ludwig hoops because the bottom hoop has ingraved ludwig super in it. the eylet has been moved from its former position and is made out of wood. now comes the super interesting part. the snaredrum strainer has ingraved or stamped „lefima“ on it. since lefima has been founded in 1861 it is the oldest known drumcompany in germany. If you look at the 1930s company logo (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lefima ) it is the same logo on the strainer. so this would be in the timeframe of the drum plus the snare has 4 holes for the strainer. im very interested what you guys think about the drum. It's kind of amazing what someone would do to keep a drum functioning when some of the parts broke, or whatever happened, to this poor drum!

The engraved Ludwig hoop is from the late 1920's or early 1930's.

So are the Lug style and that Lefima throw.

Careful though, The Lefima throw and lugs of that exact Leedy style, were used in Germany at the same time too.

So you`re seeing someone`s handy work from the depression era or 40`s

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

hey guys, well i think that sonor didn't made the snaredrums you see in the old sonor catalog. the relationship between germany and he USA was quite good in the 20s and the early 30s. i think they bought those snaredrums from leedy and resold them as their own.

i thinks so becaus they would not have geared up th manufacture the "leedystyle" lugs, Shells and hoops but never use the Tools again.

then there is the Shell. it is 14" in Diameter wich a lot of european drums from that age are not. the strainer of course is an original lefima stainer. this brings me to another part of the mistery. in germany we have a lot of registered nonprofit associations in the musical sector. it's called "Musikverein". their purpose is to host a symphonic brass band. lefima always was a major name in this sector. those brass bands tend to have a lot of Percussion instruments. since their Focus is on brassinstruments These tend to get treated very poor. so i think some dude tryed to save the associaton a litte bit of Money by "repairing" the old drum in the closet! :(
