The first movie I ever saw (or at least remember seeing) was "2001: A Space Odyssey" at age 6. I just wanted to watch the spaceships and astronauts ... my mom wound up having a lot of explaining to do. Anyway, it's still one of my favorite movies, so my handle is a tribute to the HAL 9000 computer, which was "by any practical definition of the words, foolproof and incapable of error."

Although after seeing Kona's comment, perhaps I should go by "Hanalei." In a perfect world, that's where I'd like to retire.

Hey, I want to say thanks to everyone who has responded so far. Some I knew because of the friendships struck on this forum. Others I had no idea, but have found this very entertaining and interesting!

Gilnar was a name of my first character in Dungeons and Dragons (actually, czech game inspired by the system) games we used to play with my sister. He was a ranger and had a pet rat (because I had one at the time). In one of J.R.R. Tolkien's elven languages "gil" means a star and "nar" a rat. I wanted to have an elvish name, so I figured there has to be something about stars there as elves obviously liked them a lot, and I liked rats, so that's how I came about the name.

I started using it as an internet nickname some ten years ago, because I couldn't think of anything better, and now it's my username on most sites.

I suspect it actually means something in some mediterranean language as I sometimes find it taken by some south european guy. Then I just add digits to it or go with another nickname, HonzaKrizik, explaining of which would make this already long post too lo- well, look what I did.

Mine came about from what a friend said in the late 80's....

I was in my Punk Rock/New Wave/Alternative stage then, and was playing Punk and New Wave records at a very small radio station here one night...

My friend was listening with some of her friends, and she replied...

"Wow! He is really blaring it out!"..and then laughed when she thought about what she said..as my first name is Blair...

After she told me that..I came up with Blair 'N Drums for my business....

I'm with you guys; mine is just a boring truncation of my first and last name, but the 303 is the random number AOL added on because there must have been other mchair's. I've kept this same user name since those dark ages of the internet, even though I've changed internet providers probably a dozen times. Anyone else remember paying by the minute for AOL internet access?

Mike,

I remember those "dark days!" Dial-up connection... pay by the minute (added to the long distance bill). The first time I attempted to use it, I got on espn.com. I waited for the pictures to download... big mistake!
