Is this snare drum pre 1928? Last viewed: 1 day ago

Okay, here is some pixs of the inside, the tone control and the clamp for the strainer assembly opposite the lever. Everything appears to be in order except for one missing screw as noted in the picture. I found a screw that looks identical on the outside but is shorter so I put it in without a washer but the nut is big enough to work fine. It can be easily replaced with the original type easy enough. I thought it would be better to have it secured to prevent possible damage to the strainer if it was used in the future. There is also a picture of the dent in the top rim. It's really minor but the hairline crack on the edge should be repaired by soldering or brazing is necessary. I won't even try to do that. Thanks for the information on the finish, I can see now why there is so many minor scratches if it is nickle plated. There is a quite a bit of wear on handled spots which I attribute to age and years of use. I build ukuleles and restore all kinds of other instruments so I am always looking for old instruments to restore and make some extra income on. I will be selling this drum but I really have no idea what it is worth. I much prefer to sell it with an Ebay auction. I will post a link when get the auction up. Any ideas on what a good starting price would be would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for all your help, Pete

Pete, the earlier models didn't have tone control's, yours isn't a tone flange model which is also earlier, so its at least a 34 model still rare! ebay has been crazy here lately, you may want to set the reserve in the $400.00 + and see what happens! A Ludwig of similar collectability sold on ebat recently for around $600,00, to give you a range!

Okay. Thank you so much for the info. I have learned a lot from this forum and the associated web pages. If I had any talent I would love to be a musician, but my talent lies in luthier skills and restoration work on just about anything else. I will post a link when I get the auction up. If any member of this forum buys the drum the shipping is on me. Just send me your user name and request an invoice. Cool1

I'm not sure of the exact year, but that drum came out right after Slingerland discontinued the tone flange and right before they came out with the Broadcaster.

You can date it by the muffler (tone control), which was only used on that brief period after the tone flange and then on the Broadcaster.

The Broadcaster lasted a short time and became the Radio King. The Radio King used the more common Harold Todd type muffler which Slingerland continued to use into the '60s.

That's the first metal drum of that model I've seen with that muffler.

Also, often the higher end Slingerland metal drums of that era had 3 beads on the shell and the shell was engraved "Slingerland", and the "standard" level had the one band.

However, there are examples of the the one bead shell with engraving.

In the photos here, you can see some similar parts and drums...

look at the first two for the metal drums, and the 4th one (full dress) to see the muffler on yours...

I don't think that there were metal shell Tone Flange Models...That looks like a later 1930s Artist Model...if that was a "3 ribbed" shell you are looking at 1200.00-1500.00 easy
