Is this snare drum pre 1928? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Hi, I'm new here and found this forum while researching a very old snare drum I bought at a thrift shop here in Hawaii. It has no badge or other emblem on it other then the stamped words "SLINGERLAND USA PAT PEND" on the strainer lever. There is also the name Thad Ball written in pen on the top head which I assume was the original owner. It looks exactly like the "Black Beauty" model I found on another web page except it is all chrome plated brass with no etchings or other embellishments. The closest model I could find on your picture pages is a Slingerland model 01, circa 1920, but without the logo on the side. The case is also very old and as you can see by the picture very old too. My guess is that this drum is a very early Slingerland drum. It is overall in good working condition other then a small dent on the top rim and a very small stress crack on the rim. I was hoping you could tell me a bit more about it and whether or not this would be a sought after collectible.

It is about 5 3/4 inches from rim to rim and about 14" in diameter. The case is made of some type of riveted black fiber board. There is no markings on either skin.

Welcome ukulele ! Nice find. I think it's from the 1930's. Check out the Slingerland snare drum page (1936) @ Vintage Drum Guide and look at the Artist's Model. Appears to match yours very closely.

I'm sure the Slingerland experts will chime in later and give you more info on your drum.

tubthumper is correct, ukuele your snare drum is called the ARTIST Series! it is nickel over brass 1 piece shell, and they where 1st made in 1928, all the drums in this series metal and wood are equipped with the tone flange, your appears to be one of the earlier models, could you take off the top head and take some pics of the shell inside, the 3 point strainer and the tone control, and the tone flange, is the tone flange still inside the shell?, also is it a 5x14",this is a rare drum!! very nice indeed!!

I'll take the top off after breakfast. I can replace a missing screw on the strainer lever. Fortunately it came with a tuning wrench too that is worn enough to be the original key. I don't know much about drums. Is the tone control connected to a small knob on the shell? I was wondering what that was for. Any way, stay tuned and I will send some more pictures soon.

Okay, here is some pixs of the inside, the tone control and the clamp for the strainer assembly opposite the lever. Everything appears to be in order except for one missing screw as noted in the picture. I found a screw that looks identical on the outside but is shorter so I put it in without a washer but the nut is big enough to work fine. It can be easily replaced with the original type easy enough. I thought it would be better to have it secured to prevent possible damage to the strainer if it was used in the future. There is also a picture of the dent in the top rim. It's really minor but the hairline crack on the edge should be repaired by soldering or brazing is necessary. I won't even try to do that. Thanks for the information on the finish, I can see now why there is so many minor scratches if it is nickle plated. There is a quite a bit of wear on handled spots which I attribute to age and years of use.

I build ukuleles and restore all kinds of other instruments so I am always looking for old instruments to restore and make some extra income on. I will be selling this drum but I really have no idea what it is worth. I much prefer to sell it with an Ebay auction. I will post a link when get the auction up. Any ideas on what a good starting price would be would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for all your help, Pete

After close inspection I noticed that the tuning wrench is also marked Slingerland USA so it is most likely the original key. I am curious why the logo is not stamped on the shell anywhere like the one in the catalog. That's what made me think is was even older then 1928.
