Congrats on a really great buy! Welcome to the SBP club!

John

PS - Mine are all pre-serial, came with a COB Super! I'm playing them 1-up, 1-down, the second tom is safe and sound in a hardcase. Love em to death, I play them every day.

Very nice set! I have 1974- 6" 8" 10" 14" 15" 16" concert toms like those but I don't think I would put reso heads on them. I will use my 10" and a 12" double headed tom together with a 16" floor tom and that 10" sounds great as is. But that's up to you. I would get some more opinions on converting those concert toms. I heard they are makeing a comeback. Maybe Bermuda can weigh in on this. Would hate to see you ruin the value of them. I changed my 10" drums clip mount to a Ludwig mount that takes the 9mm vintage arm. They will fit the holes without drilling so I can mount my 10" and 12" on a vintage double tom stand or bass drum post.

I saw that some major companies are offering concert toms again. My Pearl kit was all concert toms. They were really loud in a small room but I loved them. This is going to be a player kit, so I am not so concerned with resale value or originality. I know I will probably get tar and feathered for saying that. But if the lugs are not offset, how would someone know they were converted from concert to regular shells? I wouldnt lie to someone if I sold them but I am just curious.

I am not saying they don't exist, but I have never seen a factory double headed Ludwig tom with 4 hole clip mounts. You will still have a really nice set whatever you decide to do. There yours and you are the one who is going to be playing them.

Do you think I should add reso heads to the 6" and 8" toms? Not sure how much of a sound difference there will be with the little guys.Who has the best prices on hoops, lugs, and tension rods? What style lugs do I have? Classic or mini-classic? Ugghh, I am such a n00bDOH

I have experience with this and personally, I would not do it again. The 6/8 toms with new heads will sound stellar. The 10" is a line ball. I wouldn't do it again either. Depends on if you want it in front of you or not. If not, nope. $00.02

I've been waiting for someone to tell you that you can't add lugs to the smaller concert shells unless you decide to stagger the lugs. On concert toms, Ludwig would set the lugs down a little lower on the shell than they would for drums with a working reso side. If you try to place the new bottom lugs at the same distance from the bearing edge as the top lugs, the backs of the lugs will touch. It looks terrible. The only solution is to stagger the lugs on the smaller shells, and at that point, you're ruining the drums value completely. So why bother?

Play them as they are. Tune the drums in intervals of forths going from low to high. Those small concert toms will sing for you in the high-mid to high tuning ranges. It's what they were made for. Don't alter them.
