Sooo..........two good friends who happen to enjoy playing as well as collecting vintage drums get together for lunch and "drum talk" the other day. During their conversation the possibility of a trade involving a late 50s WFL Black Diamond Pearl Compacto Model (4x14) snare and a Ludwig late 70s (SN 1619590) 6.5x14 Supraphonic snare arises. Neither drum is getting much, if any, use by its current owner.
Since neither of the individuals has seen too many "Compacto" models on the market, its value comes into question. The Supraphonic obviously is much easier to determine. Both agree that "rarity" doesn't necessarily equate to increased value, especially in the vintage drum world.
Other than some slight discoloration from a drum shop sticker that was applied to the BDP wrap under the WFL badge the Compacto snare appears to be in extremely sound and original condition. A good "bath" would do it wonders. The current owner never attempted to address the discoloration, which is mainly some residue left over from the sticker. The Supraphonic appears to be in even better condition.
Neither party seems willing to "pull the trigger" on a possible trade based on the uncertainty regarding the Compacto model. Would any of you "experts" out there have any advice regarding a possible trade involving these two specific drums? Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. THANKS in advance for your help.
Attached are some pics of each drum.
