I prefer my vintage 20/12/14 kit over both my 22/13/16 and 24/13/16 kits.

From The Ploughman

They are a perfect match with a 16 floor and a 20" bass for that old school set up. I really do like them, Sam I Am, I simply love green eggs and ham!And with an 18" BD, ........ so, sooo, sweet.

Those 3x kits are gorgeous.

I have a couple of 14"x14" . I love the 14"with my Gretsch jazz kit and 18" kick and my Ludwig 14" is amazing and gives me good tonal separation with my 18" floor. I think they sound good tuned up or down.

I like the way the 14x14 looks with a 20 and 12.

20, 12, 16 looks lopsided.

From Dan Boucher

I like the way the 14x14 looks with a 20 and 12. 20, 12, 16 looks lopsided.

That depends on the color.

I have 3 of them. 2 Club Dates & a Downbeat version. It took some getting used to as I am a BIG fan of 18" FT & most of my kits were 16's. However, they certainly look appropriate with my CD kits of 20/12/14.

Tuning wise, I am still getting the hang of it but have found the drum sounds better if you tighten just above the looseness of the head (coated ambassador) so not too tight. These drums have the boom, just finding it takes a little time IMO.

Right now I have my 10/12/14/16 toms (Purewood African Mahogany - not vintage.......yet) tuned just above wrinkle (JAW) - coated G2's with Studio Rings and they are amazing.

I, for one, LOVE the sound of a 14" floor tom. Plus, the rebound feels better to me, the smaller size is easier to cart around, and they can be tuned low and not get that rumbly low end garbled sound. +1 for 14s...

Agree with Plowman that the color does have an impact on how the overall set looks with a particular size drum. In this case, they both look pretty nice.

Gee Ploughman - those kits are amazing! I am a big 14" floor tom fan. I have two; a Rogers Cleveland and a Pearl BLX from 1980. Wouldn't want to part with either. Love 16" too . . .
