14 floor toms are *****in jus like 20 kick drums are *****in- streamlined! Id like to compare a 14 floor with a low-tuned 14x10 tom with a 15x12 tenor!
14" Floor Toms
What is *****in?
I tried to get in the middle of all the popular sizes once upon a time with a 16x20, 9x12 and 14x15 set of Ludwig Classic drums. They were fine, but if I were to do it again I'm sure I'd jsut get a regular 14x20, 8x12 and 14x14.
I love 14x14 floor toms with smaller drum sets. Here are two of my Slingerland sets with either one or two 8x12 toms and 14x20 bass drum. Then, there is my all time favorite floor tom with one of my Walberg & Auge sets. The floor tom measures 16" in depth and 14" in diameter. It voices nicely with the 9x13 tom and 14x22 bass drum.
Love those 4th of July finishes. Your time is just around the corner!
Thanks. That set was a proverbial Craig's list super find. I think that I paid $150 for the toms, bass drum, some rusty old hardware, and a beat to snot incomplete COB Krupa snare. The white bands of wrap were that horrible Slingerland White Sparkle that had delaminated while the red and blue glass glitter bands of wrap were in great condition. I gave up on finding replacement White Sparkle, and ordered some vintage WMP large pattern cut to size by Precision. I already had a Student Radio King Red Glass Glitter snare, a Rogers Spotlight snare in Blue Glass Glitter, and a Radio King piccolo snare in vintage WMP. I have not done anything with the COB Slingy snare. That's a future project. These Slingies are keepers. I reluctantly traded away the Black Sparkle Slingies to downsize for the new smaller house. But, I liked the keepers more than the black set.
I like 14" for the portability and the sound, but when playing un miced live when the volume creeps up the 16" has more near field oomph. I have 2 14's a rogers and a 9 ply Eames and the eames gets big enough sounding to where I don't miss the 16 in those situations. The 14 rogers is fine at med volume also.
Great topic, and a question I've always wanted to ask (but was afraid to). I too have wondered why the premium on 14" floor toms, as well as the fascination with 18" bass drums (the latter I really don't get). I love a 20" bass drum, but I know there are guys who insist on a 22".
I must say, however, my Rogers 14" FT sounds fantastic. I concur with the comment about low tuning a 14" close to wrinkle, that's about where mine is at. It seems to me the relationship between the batter and reso heads on my 14" is very sensitive.
I can definitely see the portability factor of a Club Date 14", but my Rogers 14" is still a heavy sucker.
I've got a dilemma right now regarding drum sizes that I may start another thread over (I don't want to hijack this one). The status of my 14" FT is very much in question. Looking forward to more dialog on this topic.

Cool points awarded to the Rogers 14 floor club!
14" ft's do seem to be less available than the 16"ers. I have three kits with 14" ft's and they are fun to play. But for my style, rock and blues, I like the 16 and 18 set up. But then again I am not a great player, so I like big drums because they are easier to hit, ha ha he he!
Thank you!
