The large drum collection syndrome Last viewed: 4 hours ago

From vintagemore2000

From one who has at time to time gotten towards 40 drum kits and over 100 snare drums, and cymbals towards 1000 of them. it was fun but now I've been in reduction mode for the last couple of years. I want to get maybe down to 10 kits and 25 to 30 snare drums, I'm actually almost there now. Still have alot of drum equipment. I'm single live alone so no outside influences on my end. But after awhile it becomes a total pain owning all this stuff. It gets to where it owns you not you owning it. So now at this point in my life I just want a few ok a bunch of drums but not a Heaping big pile like I used to have.Toilet

Do you need to get rid of any hardware? I would like some nice Ludwig. Atlas or Hecules cymbal stands.

Thank you!

When I got my second kit, my guitarist asked why. I asked him how many guitars he had, and that was the end of that.

When I got my third kit (clear Vistalite), he was on board to the extent that he asked me to use it at all gigs.

By that same logic, one should only have one pair of pants, because you can only wear one at a time.

I have two. I wear one while the other is in the wash. Used to only have one, but the wife got tired of bailing me out for indecent exposure. Buncha sissy laundromat fishwives ...

All of us here naturally see no problem with our collections, but my wife constantly reminds me that there's a fine line between collecting and hoarding. I have what I consider a modest collection (7 sets, 21 snares), but where can anyone draw the line of excess? 30 sets? 100?

As long as Jay Leno can own a hundred vintage cars and motorcycles and still be considered a "collector", we are all above reproach.

Wow! I'm always amazed when I hear of other members' collections here. I was up to 7 kits at one point and felt it "unmanageable". I'm down to 5 now, and looking to bring it down to 3. I'm down to 16 snares from 30+. Cymbals? Eh...they don't take up that much space. My collection is very modest, and I'm done with justifying what I own by saying, "but, I need such-and-such a kit/snare/cymbal for such and such a situation..." Honestly, my Downbeat works for everything.

The only person I got remarks from about the number of kits I had was my wife. She's very gracious, and she understands that different drum kits sound different, but she was very "concerned" when I told her that I had bought my 7th drum set. I was already thinking, "Do I really want 7 kits to store, transport, shuffle around, and maintain?" The answer I came up with was a strong NO. Maybe when the kids grow up and move out I'll reconsider.

I like the "how many guitars do you own" comment. Classic.

Does anyone know of any vocalists that have multiple mics? "I use the (mic A) for jazz gigs and the (mic B) for my cover band..."

I sometimes find the people who make those comments don't collect anything or have any hobbys themselves. I guess that gives them a lot of free time to just be a smartass. Laughing H

Good point. :)

The singer for my old cover band made sure that somebody took her mic and stand at the rehearsal previous to the gig so that the other members could set it up for her. The guitar player protested by leaving it in his car, 4 blocks from the venue, saying, "um...I forgot it. Here's my keys, my car is on the corner of _____ and _______." It was raining, too, and the rest of us were nowhere to be found.

Oh, and she demanded equal pay as well. Simple solution: we told her she was getting paid the same as we were.

Okay, back to the Drum Collection Syndrome thread...

We have similar tastes in drums...vintage Ludwig and Gretsch! I'm soon getting a progressive jazz 60s kit...one is on order. This will be one of the 5 that is staying!
