I love my DW solid Craviotto Collector's series 5 1/2 X14 with a Evan's HD Dry Head. I have about 60 snares including supra and super sensitive. The DW sounds incredible

Lots of great main snares here! Very cool to see players relying on vintage snares, but then again this is a Vintage forum... :)

Here's my go-to.. 5.5x14 Steel Keplinger - I've used it on a bunch of gigs and rehearsal now and it's the perfect drum for me. It replaces my old 5x14 '71 Supra, and late 70s Black Beauty. Those were great drums, but the Keplinger just sounds too great to not schlepp the extra weight around...

I have a room full of vintage drums, but the DW is sill my favorite paying snare. The title is Show us your workhorse snare, not show us your workhorse vintage snare.

Any of my Rogers Powertones...

or the wood Superten or Dyna-Sonics from the early 80s.

I have 38 snare drums. All but two of them would be an excellent choice most days.

Go ahead and laugh!!! LoLoLoLoIt's a 'restored' CryBaby DIXIE steel shell 5 1/2" x14".It's not round. It's not flat. It's dented (even after taking a rubber hammer as well as vice grips to it).Slight snare buzz unless the tone control is just barely touching the batter head, which itself is an old 1960's Remo Ambassador with which I had to use epoxy glue to re-glue the mylar head back into the aluminum hoop after the original epoxy had aged and cracked, letting the mylar pull right out of the hoop.No butt plate to speak of - snare strings simply hand tied around some "piece" attached to shell! DOHBUT ... It sounds GREAT!Really puts out ... Has better tone, response, and volume than 99% of the newer Asian import snares in stores today!Cool1Best part - Never have to worry about it getting damaged or stolen!Laughing H

I have a couple of these (not badged as Dixies though). They are great snares - don't let anybody tell you otherwise.......that's a great shell that Pearl made. I also have one of these that is a 10 lug. It's what I am playing now daily and it sounds as good as anything I have ever had.

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Okay, so maybe this snare is way too new to have earned the 'workhorse' title, but this baby is staying with me until the day I die. 2012 6.5x14 Ludwig Black beauty brass on brass. Bought it in march and after those 3 long months of waiting I instantly fell in love.
