old drum questions Last viewed: 11 seconds ago

hi,

new here, and not a drummer ... sorry... ;)

My wife gave me a surprise, an old drum kit found in an antiques shop, unfortunately with no information of brand / model / age.

I've made few pics, in case of somebody could help. I will search for a hit-hat stand ans a cymbal stand of the same age. The cymbal stand is certainly a simple arm fixed to the bass drum (?), and it will be difficult to find the exact model.

Unfortunately, there's no floor toom.

Thanks in advance for any info !

Cheers

Phil

to me they look a bit like old Stewart drums

which were japanese made drums from the 1960s and 70s

but Stewart usually had a badge that looked similar to the oval Slingerland badge

I'm sure someone else would know better than I

They do not look like Stewart to me or any of the MIJ stencil drums, but then again I have only been into this for a little over a year. Boy as soon as you think you have seen everything something like this comes along. You came to the right place, there are guys on here that are very sharp and will know what you have.

So your not a drummer, Are you going to learn or just restore them for fun or what? Ill be watching this thread, I want to see what they are.

Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the forum! Welcome

They definitely are not 60's or 70's MIJ (Made in Japan) drums. While I can't say for certain what these are, the fact that you are in France suggests that they may be a lower line of drums offered by either Sonor or Premier. The snare drum appears to be made of nice wood and the muffler and snare mechanism is well beyond what you'd find in an MIJ. Maybe others with more knowledge will give their opinions. Let's see what we can find out!

Hi Mike! I also am thinking Sonor, based on the snare drum muffler. I've never seen a kit like this, so am curious to find out more.

Another excellent guess! That snare mechanism is over-the-top in engineering, again suggesting Sonor. The fact that the snare and bass drum have less lugs also suggest a "student" line of drums.

Wish I knew exactly what they are, but I vote German, possibly out of the Sonor company. They could also be Eastern European or Russian. Tromsa or one of those. That snare drum is way too sophisticated for any MIJ kit. The grain runs along the shell, not *vertically, (*as in Asian made drums,) which helps lean the call toward European manufacture. The six lug bass drum makes it a low-end/beginner kit, but they are really well-built and the components look to be quality.

Welcome to VDF! I suggest you clean them up, take a few basic lessons, practice 15/20 minutes every day and hopefully, in the not too distant future, you'll be able to play with other musicians in a live band. There is no drug on planet earth that can get you as high as playing music with other musicians can get you.

Enjoy the drums, the Universe has opened a door for you to enter another world. Up to you whether you walk through or not.

Jump in, the water is fine!

John

Too many great drums to list here!
