Well I was two years old when you started playing so I am not too old! I joined the formn to ask a question, thinking that would be the end of it. Thats why my name is not related to drums, I didnt even take time to think up a cool name. Since then I have gone from one drum set to seven drum sets and use this formn almost every day, kinda like reading the news paper, but all good news!Welcome, you will like it here I promise.Thank you,Jeff C
LOL, " One drum set to seven" that is a familiar story around hereClapping Happy2. I hope olderdrummer's wife doesn't see your post.
Welcome
Alright (not so) Older Drummer:
Welcome, welcome, welcome! I'm one of the Rogers guys who got dizzy when you stated you were a Dyna tuner at the factory. You have to tell us specifically what you were trained to do to tune the Dyna's to the Rogers specifications. Lots of us here use Rogers guru TommyP's guide to Dyna tuning. I'd love to hear your "Rogers-approved" method.

Question: Now that the word "vintage" is synonymous with "expensive", does that mean I'm worth a lot more now because I'm "vintage"?? Happy Holidays to all!Proud owner of '68 Ludwig Standard Avocado Strata kit :D
Well, IMHO anyone owning a Ludwig Standard Avocado Strata kit is priceless! Yeah, maybe I'm biased... but those others, they just don't know.
They've never been... Avocado.
Hi Everyone,
Long time drummer, vintage newbe but I've been doing my homework. :)
Looking forward to sharing pictures/videos and knowledge of vintage drums with all of you.
I've recently purchaced and detailed/restored a few Slinglerland drums and kits.
1930's Slingerland 14 x 28 Bass Drum WMP: Repaired and touched up the hoops, fixed a crack in the wrap. Cleaned off the rust on all hardware. Put new bass drum heads on it. Looks and plays BEAUTIFULLY!!
1956-59 Slingerland Chicago Badge 14 x 24 bass drum and 9 x 13 tom WMP. Came with a 1964 Niles Badge 12 x 15 snare that is used for a floor tom. Someone put period push button floor tom mounts/legs on it. Sits low but sounds great!. Kit looks and sounds amazing!
Can't wait to see what all of you have!
Thanks!
Jeremy
Hello, I have been lurking for a while thought it was time to try and get involved. I don't own anything vintage or heck anything at all right now. I am trying to get back on the horse after a while off. I look forward to all the pics and discussion and hope I can add and be of some value to the board.
Hello fellow Vintage Drum forum members
Kenwood from Rhode Island here
I have been a member on a simalar forum for a few months now
But I am a newly registered member today on V.D.F.
I am a 55 year old student drummer. who played some as a teenager
my first kit being an orange sparkle Norma brand four piece kit.
I never took any formal drum lessons but instead played to my favorite records with headphones
I picked up a few bad habits in that I play exclusively matched grip and also open handed which I believe means that as a right handed person I used my
left hand to play my Hi hat and my right to play my snare.
once I grew up and went off on my own I abandoned my drum playing
and did not pick it up again until about two years ago.
A pal of mine had bought himself a litely used Pearl forum kit from craig's list
and I was so impressed with it. and had so much fun playing it
That I went right out and found the same kit also on Craig's list
Mine was cheaper but was not as well maintained
I needed heads and a few tension rods and such
so I went back to craig's list and found instead of heads and tension rods
a ludwig accent kit for fifty dollars
the kit was just the drums and tom mounts no other hardware
so back I went looking for hardware .before I knew it I had five or six full and/or partial drum kits.
one drum in particular has helped me more than all others
to improve some in my playing
I bought a twelve or thirteen (never measured) Tama snare drum in sort of a maple finish with a pearl mesh practice batter head on it
I sit watching television with that snare between my knees
and just play and play and play
since then as maybe a consolation or compensation to my drumming abilites
I have emersed myself into drums and drum history and have developed quite a hobby of finding fixing and collecting old drum gear
I enjoy networking locally and on-line with other like minded folks
Most of my growing collection of drum gear is either entry level or intermeadiate level stuff.
My absolute favorite focus is on the 60's and 70's Japanese stencil drum kits
I caught the Japanese stencil kit love bug after responding to a local Craig's Listing titled "10 assorted drum shells for $50.00"
Of the ten shells there was a no name but newer looking 16"black floor tom
A Tama rockstar 16" floor tom in an odd sort of color between a pink and a maroon but not at all a wine red more like a dull beet red color
Also in the group was a distressed, fairly recent, blue, four piece Gammon shell pack in standard sizes
But the real cookie of the deal was an orange sparkle four piece kit
three of the pieces (20" bass, 12" mounted, and fourteen inch floor,) have round "Ralston" badges and were complete save for reso side hoops and rods
which I have found to be almost impossible to find in that the kit is done in the club date/stage band style with the one large lug casing in the center of the shell and using the extra long 5 7/8" metric tension rods the close matching orange sparkle snare drum has a foil Decca badge on it
I have since collected four or five other stencil kits in varying levels of distress and completion some being
Ralston gold sparkle , Ralston blue sparkle, Stewart in WMP, Gambals Blue and Gold sparkle, and several others orphaned toms and snares
I scour all of my southern New England Craigs listings
for more ,kits ,orphan shells and parts. at reasonable prices
My last find was just this past Friday I found a black Cortley bass drum and two mounted toms up in Wrentham Mass (which I learned through some quick online research are exactly the same as TV host Conan O'brians first drum kit. (also these Cortleys do seem to be of somewhat better build quality than most of my other stencil drums.
I sometimes look at ebay also
but am generally frustrated by the inflated prices and have yet to bid on anything from there.
I invite any fellow forum menbers who might know of some of this gear being availabe to please get in touch with me
I am anxious to meet forum member Mikey777 who I have come to believe is quite the expert in the area of Mij Stencil brand kits.
Having a blast with these Drums ...Thanks All....Kenwood

Hello! It has been sugested I introduce myself, since I have never posted to "the Community" yet. I've been playing drums since 1964 after switching from clarinet, (cause drums are "cooler" for H.S.marching band). After graduation, I played professionally more than 25yrs. and taught lessons. I also worked @ ROGERS, Dayton, OH as QC tester & tuner of Dynasonic snare drums untill they relocated to Fullerton, CA. After the family arrived, road gigs weren't good for child rearing, so I worked as a cargo handler & giged around locally. I've got a 5pc 1974 Gretsch, marine pearl kit & a couple of import practice sets, one of which I need a tom holder for (by the way).I have the bass drum rail for a Ray McKinley style tom holder, so maybe, if anyone who reads this Knows where I may find the tom holder clamp-on parts, (they don't need to be pretty) please let me know.olderdrummer D' Drummer
Welcome...I'm curious in a geek type of way...what QC problems did you encounter on the Dynas and was there one constant QC problem?
