Camco set w/24" bass Last viewed: 17 minutes ago

From Ryan vonR.

. I'm pretty sure that rough Camco that was on ebay a few years ago had re-rings in the bass drum and was definitely a lighter coloured wood inside. Now I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger on that one.

I was wondering if you were saying that you thought you had seen one of the two shells pictured on e-bay? or if you had seen another on e-bay that did have re-rings? I just wanted to clear that up. If you did see another 24" of the Oaklawn era with re-rings, I would be very interested in seeing that. It would be neat to see one to compare....

Thank You, Ryan[/QUOTE]

Oh it was an orange coloured kit I was close to buying about 18 months ago or so. I was so close to getting it because it reminded me of my tangerine DW kit but was the real Camco deal. It was missing BD spurs, Tom mounting post and had massive snare rash on the rack tom. I was sure I could find the parts but the price was just to much for me. I studied the pictures for days and I'm sure I remember seeing re-rings. I may be wrong though. There is no way I can call up the pictures now.

Thanks for clearing that up. Do you remember if it was a 24" bass? For that matter, does anyone have documentation of a "standard" Camco shelled 24" from the Oaklawn era?

That would be a nice comparison. I can only assume there has to be a few out there.

Thanks, Ryan

Ryan It was a 24 13 16 config. It looked cool because it was so scratched up. I would of shone the chrome up but kept the shells as is. It kind of had that old tired worn in for decades Fender Guitar look, like the old blues guys have even when they play arena's and concert halls.

Also looking back at my old posts on a Drum forum that I don't use anymore I discovered I started the thread about those drums back in March 2010!! So not 18 months ago but 3 years!!! They were Oaklawn drums. Unfortunately the link to the ebay site is long gone so I can't bring up any pictures.

A 24" Oaklawn is a rare bird. So many 20s during that era with 22s becoming more common near the end of that era. I'd bet it's actually easier to find an Oaklawn 18 than it would be to find a 24.

No Doubt, I totally agree. we have all seen mostly 20s, then 22s with 18s and 24s bringing up the rear. If after reading what Dave K. said about his 1970 or 71 order I would have to say the evidence points to them being prototypes and made at the very end of the Oaklawn era. I don't know that for a fact it is just a possibility that all the evidence seems to suggest. Dave stated he had to wait on the 14x24" and did not order it without re-rings...It just came that way from the factory. He also stated he could not get a 14" ride or side tom. That's why he took the 14x14" that was available, and used it as a rack, or side tom. That would make sense if it were right before the sale of the company and move to Chanute, Ks. His drums were listed on Ebay with a starting bid of $4,999.00 and after getting an overwhelming response he decided not to sell, and pulled the listing. He won't sell the snare drum to me either...Lol...The title of his listing stated, Oaklawns...14x24", 9x13", 14x14", 16x16",& 6.5x14" SD. It makes me wonder since Camco was one of the forefront innovators, if these 3 bass drums are possibly the 1st prototypes of what was to come in the late 70s, with most all of the drum companies going to re-ringless thicker shelled drums? It does make sense if you think about it, and the timeline fits as well..

Innovator? Or cost saving move? Sadly most of the things we think we're innovator comes from the company trying to save money. To get rid of re-rings saves a lot of time and material. So removing re-rings in that regard makes sense coupled with the fact the drum was ordered and just showed up that way was an angle I wasn't thinking of. Since there are only three known so far I'd say Slings theory of it happening right before the sale to Kustom is probably correct.

I heard once about an employee for Kustom being ordered to throw boxes of oval badges aWAY. Could you imagine if that employee had kept them instead of following orders? That was the first time I was able to determine that the oval badge was at the end of the Oaklawn era. Now if someone could just step up and give us the start date of the oval badge!

Here is my Fibes snare I bought in the early 70s. I used this with my Camco set when I needed a louder snare. I wanted the copper finish as it looks great with the walnut Camcos

And an interior picture of my 24" bass drum

I know it's an old thread and I am not looking to fuel old arguments but it looks like another 24" Oaklawn bass drum without re-rings surfaced.

Some serious modifications and non-original parts but the shells look legit.
