Ludwig Bass Drum Spurs Last viewed: 5 minutes ago

I would appreciate it greatly if one of you Ludwig "gurus" out there would "enlighten" me as to what determined which configuration of bass drum spur was issued from the factory with the company's vintage bass drums and/or kits.

Was the size of the bass drum (18/20/22/24) the determining factor? Perhaps the model (Clubdate / Super Classic)?

I ask because I've still got my 1963 Sky Blue Pearl Clubdate Kit purchased new from the factory that came with the 1305 spurs (1955-1961). I've also seen the 1303 spurs (1953-1984) on various Ludwig bass drums from the 60s in lieu of the 1305 (1962-1969) model.

Was it simply a case of using whatever happened to be available at the time? Are there countless factory-issued "mismatched" spurs on vintage Ludwig kits? If so, is there actually such a thing as a "period correct" configuration for Ludwig spurs?

I always associated the spikes with smaller and/or "budget" drums

The fold outs or "gull wings" were sometimes problematic but I associate those with the 60's kits with 20" bass drums

The curved disappearing spurs replaced the gull wings around 1970, I think.

That's what I think...Ludwig-Dude will know more than I do, in this regard. Stand by.

the cheaper and smaller drums often had those telescopic spurs.. They are most commonly seen on 20", 18" and club dates.. They sometimes apear on 22X12 drums and always on 22X12 drums.. The fold-out spurs usually appear on the common 20X14, 22X14, 24X14 etc and was replaced with the curved spurs around 70/71 from what I've seen.. Ive seen some rare 1970's kits wich still have the fold-out spurs..

thing is that there are exceptions.. alot of them.. In your case, you're very lucky imo, since the telscopic spurs arent any good..

Does anyone know if ALL 18" Ludwig Bass Drums from the 60s came with factory-issued telescopic spurs in lieu of "fold-outs"?

I think they did. I've never seen an 18" bass drum with fold outs -only the spikes.

hi,i was asking the very same question not long ago,i have a 68 super classic 22x14 with factory fitted twin 1303 on it.Apparently you could order what ever you wanted when buying new.It also has twin dampeners on the toms,the guy must have liked to double up on everything,it even has twin rail mounts,so there you go,Pete
