Pearl wood fiberglass Last viewed: 11 minutes ago

I had a set of Pearl wood fiberglass drums which I bought in 74 and played till 88. I wish I hadn't sold them. I was just wondering if the fiberglass thing was just a gimmick or if it really enhanced the drums. I liked the way they sounded, really warm. What kind of wood did they use?

Also I'd like to attach a photo but I can't figure out how don't know how.

First, to post a photo, when you are in the open screen to type, you scroll down until you see a section called "Manage Attachments" There you have the option to upload pix. Ckick on Browse, find the pictures and click "upload" when you have finished, you hit "submit reply" and you have posted pix.

The fibreglass shells did indeed enhance the sound, they were very loud as well as warm. The wood was mahogany I believe. These were some seriously badazz drums. They still fietch big bucks today, even for poor condition drums. They will bring up close toa grand with a cool or "rare" wrap. I hate to use "rare" when talking about most drums, especially MIJ stuff. But really prefer the term "desirable"....

Awesome kit- I think Pearl is very much recreating that sound currently with their carbon-ply maple kits. If not so much with these wood-fiberglass then definitely the pretty similar to the Artist series GAX Maple/Fiberglass from 77-80 something. That photos a real time capsule!

Are you sure that the drums were wood-faberglass shells? pearl made both type's of shell's all faberglass and w/f by the photo your badge's would have been on all f/g shell's..but if you set had another badge at the grommet hole it would have said wood-faberglass with the pearl badge on front of the shell..Mikey

I know of a kit that's priced at only a couple of Bens. I've put my eyes on it and know that it's real and happy. It's a cream color and in pretty good shape. I don't want a loud kit, so I passed. Same reason I passed on the Fibes kit a couple of months ago. If you are interested, it's at a large music store. PM me and I'll pass on the info to you.

My set had a second badge, a wide, not very tall badge that actually said wood fiberglass I thought it said something else too.

I have one other Picture taken around '78 I'll look for it, maybe it shows more.

Wow...you used to be such a handsome lad, too.....Violin

:p

Joking aside....these don't garner much attention on the market these days. My ex-GF once went dumpster-diving at a church around the corner from her house and hauled a kit of these across the bridge to me (yeah...she was a pretty good girlfriend in a lotta ways).

Had 'em sitting around for several years....then I ended up rehabbing 'em, re-wrapping and sold them very, very cheap to my niece; who gave them to her boyfriend for a birthday present a few years ago (hey...I guess that makes her a good girlfriend too?). Pic below.

What I can say for 'em is...the fiberglass coating on the interior of the shell makes 'em hella loud...really punches the volume.

The shells were just typical 6-ply Luan but with that coating of fiberglass to boot...the edges nothing special...either just a roundover or a double-45 with a rounded peak as opposed to a sharp peak. I recut the edges on the kit I renovated and actually it made 'em sound pretty decent...much crisper than the factory edges.

I mean, seriously...you could likely pick up a 4-pc. kit (3 toms and bass drum) for around $300-400 if you can find one.

That's exactly what the other badge looked like Mikey. I wish I hadn't sold it. But you can't keep everything you buy. Of course I still have my Kenner Close-n-Play. Go figure.
