Black Oyster Pearl Last viewed: 1 minute ago

Hi guys. First time post here. Just acquired a non-serial Ludwig Black Oyster Pearl, 18 Inch bass drum, 12 rack, 14 floor tom. matching snare. The shells are clear lacquered inside, black stamped MAR64 on all the shells. The bass drum is virgin, all shells have the reinforcement hoops. I also have the original cowbell, and the original speedking. Anyone able to let me know what I actually have?

Also, were any Ludwig kits made without badges?

Let's see some pics! Sounds like you may have a valuable kit there.

Will post pics this afternoon when I finish work. JW where I could find a 1964 Ludwig Catalog so I could try to ID this kit. Anyone else have an 18" Bass Drum here? If so, I am looking for a replacement resonant head. Preferably one of the Vintage Ludwig. Any ideas where to find one? All i can find is 20" and 22" ones.

Go to "Visit our Partner Web Sites" at the top right of this page...click, and a drop down box will appear. Select Vintage Drum Guide, and click on Ludwig. A page will open with lots of categories on Ludwig.

I'm a bit confused now after looking in the catalogs. I cant find any 18" bass drum. My snare is a matching snare too, not a chrome one. (Wish it was a Supra) Can anyone help me out? Pics coming tonight.

Me either..... is the bass 18x12 ?

That's a Jazzette size, and didn't come around until '67 ?

Are there vent holes on your drums where badges would have been?

[COLOR="Purple"]Could'a been a custom order (particularly considering the lack of attachment hardware).

I will tell you one thing...IF the shells really match up and they are all date-stamped the same....given those sizes in THAT finish PLUS a snare drum....that kit is worth well over $2500, eeeeeasy.....

We eagerly await photos...(it was downright....cruel..... of you to start this post here without 'em !!!) CryBaby

It's deeper than 18x12. And there are standard grommets with no signs of tampering.

Well, it is NOT a Jazzette if it's stamped 1964. Since you say it's "virgin", it could have been a marching bass drum. It could have been custom ordered, as has been suggested.

I will reserve any more input until I can see detailed photographs of seams, scarf joints, date stamps, position and style of spurs, etc. Please include a measurement of the depth of the bass drum.

These things are always suspicious to me. In any case, you won't find that kit catalogued anywhere. It not a "known" configuration, if that makes sense.

And, btw, the real monetary value of the 18" bass drum is if it's part of a matched Jazzette kit. Since there were no Jazzettes in 1964 and there were never any Jazzettes that came with virgin bass drums, the value of such a drum is nominal as far as collectibility is concerned.
