I suspect that one could march with this drum...

From tubelugs

That's wire-wound silk. Before that was woven silk and/or cotton, with no metal component in them. Kind of like an elegant gut snare. They didn't hold up too well and are hard to find in good condition.

Oh, cool! I have a couple of old snare drums and they both have the wire-wound composition, but I didn't think they were silk. They look like regular cotton shoelaces with that super-fine wide coil of wire. That's really interesting.

Now I need to know more....

Were there ANY production drums that actually used catgut (which was really rawhide, if I remember correctly)? I mean, there weren't any real "cat" gut snare wires ever...were there? I thought they just got that term because of how the grouping of snares resembled the sinuous muscles of a cat. If not, then poor kittah!

These drums tend not to bring the big bucks, because there are relatively few collectors of them. Yours is in excellent condition, with the exception of the blown head. If I was going to sell it, I'd get that head re-tucked first by Rob Cook at rebeats.com. See if you can re-use the original hide (if it's torn, then he can replace it). Then I'd put it on eBay, so it is visible to a much larger audience. I'd expect to get $150-175 for it; maybe even two bills considering its condition.
