1964 Ludwig SuperSensitive Snare Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

I have a 1963 Ludwig Oyster Blue Pearl super classic kit (no serial numbers) with a 1964 supersensitive snare serial#15930. I may unfortunately have to sell this kit and am wondering if i should sell the snare individually? Unfortunately the snare has a fair bit of pitting and flaking but the rest of the drums (brass hoops) are in good condition. I presume that the snare is fairly rare with this date?? Am I also right in thinking that it would not be worth re-chroming the snare as it would cost more than its value, and powder-coating would change the sound? A final question (which is a long shot, I know) the kit was purchased by my father in the UK 2nd hand from "some guy in Liverpool" in '64, and I know there were very few kits around in the uk with these dates because of import duties. Anyone got any idea who could have originally owned them? They would have been v. expensive to buy back then!

Ivor Arbiter was the guy who hooked many people up with genuine American Ludwig kits in England in those days. Unfortunately, he passed away a little while back. Bob Henrit used to work for him. Maybe you could do a search on Bob Henrit and try contacting him for more information. Outside of that, I have no idea. You could check at the Mike Dolbear website and see if some of the British drumming scene might have a lead.

Check out the web site of "Not so modern drummer" magazine, they have an online article about Ringo's original Premier kit (pre-Ludwig). The writer of that article might know some thing about Ludwigs in England circa 1964.

I've read that after the first appearance by the Beatles on Ed Sullivan's TV show that Ludwig drum production exploded and they made millions of drums between then and 1970.

Do you have a pic of the snare throw off .. I have a chance to buy a 64 but it's missing the snare wire and I think the snare guard but a need to see a pic to be sure .. Does anyone know if there are snare wires that will fit the supersensitive drums of this era
