Is this a good deal??? Help/Advice Please

Hey guys, there is a guy local that has an older red sparkle kit for sale. There are no badges on the drums. From the research I have done on here, looks like the typical Japan kit from the 60's or 70s, Slingerland looking lugs, wood grain going from edge to edge. Looks like the kit is in outstanding condition. He said the pictures don't give the chrome justice, he said it is very nice. He says the wrap is in great shape. What do you think of these?? Any ideas of the make, wood type or age?? He is asking $275 for them, that includes the bass, toms, floor tom and a snare. They have all new heads and they have been cleaned inside and out and every thing polished. Do you think these have potential to sound good? Looks like the shells are pretty good, have reinforcement rings and the wood looks good. Let me know what you think, I value your opinions. Thanks.

That grain is 'interesting'. I would pick them up. Looks like a very nice kit. Fact is, I wouldn't hesitate. The wrap can be brought back to life and the chrome is not too bad. Mount looks good. The shells are really good. No joke.

you guys are the experts......what wood do you think that is?? He seemed to think that it was maple but from what I have read many of those kits were mahogany.....but he says is surely isn't so I am hoping you guys can shed some light on the wood type.

An idea when these were from and what brand?? I know sometimes the mounts can identify the stencil kits...

If you guys say they are worth $275 I will pick them up. If you have some more feedback I would appreciate it, I want to make sure I am making a good buy.

That's one of the reasons that I (and several others) am hesitant about giving out advice on this forum. The ultimate decision is always your own. If you ask, "what would YOU do", then I will tell you. My situation is my own and most likely is very unique. So, the variables that go into making a drum related decision are going to be different. I have a VERY supportive wife who will stop the world to ensure I have absolutely anything I need for drumming. She would never ever question me. She retired at 38 years of age and is well into her second career. I am now into my second career as a teacher. I've been drumming since the age of about two. Most of those years I did it professionally. My drum decisions are based on that life history.

It always makes me shiver when someone puts down hard earned dough on something I said. That's a very uncomfortable place.

Would I buy this kit? yup. Without a doubt. It's worth that money to me. I love the color and the look of it. I can see those shells are of a very high quality and will sound extremely nice. That much I know. Beyond that, ... I got nothing. If it were close to me, I would be taking it home.

For me, $275 is a lot of money for a stencil kit which is drums only.

I appreciate all your opinions. And yes, at the end of he day the final decision will be mine. The issue is that the set is well over an hour from me and just wanted some preliminary opinions to see if it was even worth going to look at. I think the interesting thing is the wood seen on the interior of the shells. Looks like a maple but not seeing it in person it is hard to tell. The reinforcement rings look nice and he said all the seams on the wrap are intact and in great shape. He disassembled everything, polished all the chrome and cleaned the shells inside and out and polished the wrap. For $275, I think it could be a cool kit with the right heads and tuning. Thanks again for any and all input.

The wood is definitely not maple. I just traded away a kit almost identical to that one in blue sparkle. The shells are a cheap mahogany leaning towards luan. They are not that bad, but I think they will need some edge work to get them to sound good. I think $275.00 is too high. The hardware is not that great, bass drum spurs and tom mounts are fair, mufflers are cheap and everything is metric. If you are holding out for a vintage kit I would wait. I just saw a set of Ludwig standards go for 475.00 on ebay.

I was eyeballing that one as well, and almost jumped in, but he had the matching snare listed separately for $250, I think. Anyway, way too high for the snare....
