I think you have been smoking that luan!
Is this a good deal??? Help/Advice Please
you guys are the experts......what wood do you think that is?? He seemed to think that it was maple but from what I have read many of those kits were mahogany.....but he says is surely isn't so I am hoping you guys can shed some light on the wood type. An idea when these were from and what brand?? I know sometimes the mounts can identify the stencil kits...If you guys say they are worth $275 I will pick them up. If you have some more feedback I would appreciate it, I want to make sure I am making a good buy.Rich
Hi, that set is a late 60s[[1968-71]]Pearl set,If you look at the lugs, claws and t-rods,muffler knob, the copy of the ludwig rail mount---its Pearl,If you by the set remove one of the lugs it will say pearl inside it... Set looks like someone removed the badges from it[at the bass drum hole??] or it could be that it never had any badges too..The shell Pearl used 3 types of wood,my guess is a low end maple or beech...Sets a good set but to me alittle high see if you could get it for 200.00 to 225.00...Mikey
Thanks Mikey. I thought I was losing my mind there. It does look like maple or beech to me. It will sound nice when worked. The mahogany in the pic I posted was a really cheap shell running long grain. This stuff has some nice swirls and a much tighter grain.
Maple, no way. Beech, man your reaching! I have been a woodworker for 33 years. I make custom furniture and cabinets. Being able to identify wood is part of my job. You are trying to I.D. something from a not so great picture. I will say no more.
Lucky, what kind of wood is this? pretty sure it's luan, but just thought I'd double check.
Looks like luan to me. Pictures can be hard to positive I.D. wood. The drum in question I can be pretty sure about because I had the same kit .
Lucky, I'm not that hung on being right or wrong or even pertinent. If I'm wrong then I'm wrong. If I'm right then I'm right. It just doesn't matter much to me at this juncture. The gent wants to know if it's a good deal. To me, it is. To you, maybe not. I am thinking that he has enough info here to make a purchasing decision. That's cool that you spent so many years working with wood. I had a different path which led me to my conclussions. People are right and people are wrong. Sometimes at the same time. Pretty cool how life works that way. Take care.
