Radio king concerns Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Well I just got back from Memphis and picked up a three piece Slingerland Radio King in faded/yellowed white marine pearl. I bought the kit a month ago from a Memphis drum store and opted to pick them up because my family had a trip planned last week. The wrap is rough (and the seller made me aware of that) with some splits in the wrap, fading, yellowing . . . basically what one would expect from a 64 year old drum set that was played. I finally got to do the close up examination on them this morning and had a few questions/concerns that I thought may be answered from the fine folks of VDF.

-The floor tom rims do not say "Radio King." I always thought that at least the top rim would have the logo. The rack tom has it, but neither of the floor tom rims do.

-The floor tom seems to be in round by the naked eye. The head, although a bit difficult to remove, came off pretty easy. However, I have never had a more difficult tuning a drum. The bearing edges seem okay, but I cannot get a good tone out of it. It's like it is broken but yet I look at it and it looks great.

-The rack tom does not have the same amount of fading and yellowing as the other two pieces.

-On the rack tom, the very bottom of lug holes can be seen on under a couple of the lugs (see pic).

-The tension rods on the toms seem to be a bit of a hodge podge. Some newer, some older and some different lengths.

-The wrap has been glued down in a few places so it must have been coming free.

When I put this all together, I am beginning to question my purchase. I paid $850 for the kit which is by no means a lot for a Radio King. But I am starting to doubt what the kit really is. The store I bought it from claim that they took this kit in as a trade in and passed on very little information other than that it was a Radio King and that the kit had some cosmetic issues, thus the lower price. The insides look correct, but the different rims, tension rods, wrap fade, tuning issues, weird partial holes under lugs and probably some other stuff I have missed, make me wonder if I just purchased someone else's cast offs, orphans or whatever. What do you guys think?

I think they are 100% radio kings. I've seen older lugs pull up when people apply too much tension on the heads, it yanks them. Seen it on MIJ kits too that don't insert into holes but are rather flat faced. The floor tom might need a little smoothing on the edges, or maybe the edges need to be treated. And as far as rims, not shocked that they would be swapped out. My RK snare, the top hoop I can't use, it's not in the round anymore. It's so thin, that over the years it bent. So the same could have happened here.

What is the problem with the. floor tom tuning wise,? Is it dead sounding? if so get some suspension floor tom feet,

Definitely get yourself some of those Pearl ISO feet, especially if you've got the old style straight legs. My RK floor was dead to the world until I got those feet on. it's also not the easiest drum to tune, fairly round but a little oversize, and seems to have the best results with coated Ambassadors both sides (and the aluminium collars cut to open up the diameter of the head and I used a hot needle to put some 'breather' holes around the perimeter of the bottom head in lieu of a vent on the drum). I also tend to tune them up higher, even the out and then slowly back the tuning off while hitting the drum and applying pressure in the centre to get a good purchase over the edges.

They're a lot of work to get 'right' but once it's there... damn.

For sure the rubber feet help quite a bit. The bottom of my 16" RK floor is a bit OOR and had a few chips in the bearing edge I filled. Took some time to dial it in nice tuning wise. You'll get there don't worry. I used Evans G2 batter and clear reso glass. I like the G1 better. Just remember the mahogany interior warms these up. So not as open as a maple shell. Let the drums acclimate a bit too. I find going from cold dry winter air to damp warmer air can make them a bit wonky sometimes. $850 is still a pretty nice deal for those. Not too big a deal to replace missing RK top hoops and some T rods.

A lot of Radio King toms don't have stamped rims. Even some snares don't have them.

I hate a mishmash of tension rods too. Find a set from a parts seller or buy the Pearl steel ones.
