Rogers Lug Question Last viewed: 4 seconds ago

Loading...

Would someone be kind to explain the difference between the B&B (bread & butter right?) lugs & Beavertail lugs? As I looked around I saw many threads but just wanted a simple picture to actually see the difference.

It would be greatly appreciated as I'm a learning newbie on the Rogers drums.

Thanks all for all the knowledge here.

"Bread and Butter" "Beavertails"

and Beavertails on a bass...

Bread & Butter and Beavertail are of course our nicknames for these Rogers lugs. I don't think you'll find any examples of Rogers using these terms. The B&B lugs were prone to cracking and were replaced by the newer Beavertails in 1963 (Cleveland era). Exactly when in 1963 is difficult to determine, but I've recorded that Holiday label serial number 35327 had B&B lugs, while Holiday tom serial number 36131 has Beavertails.

Early B&B lugs had inserts in the shell holes similar to the screw tabs on the Beavertail lugs. The hole pattern is also slightly different, meaning they are not a direct swap out of styles.

Thanks.

So which are more sought after? I imagine the older the drum the more probable the lugs will be B&B correct?

Not really..

The beginning of the beavertail lugs started "@" sept/Oct of 1963.

They were still using 3ply shells..until the change to 5ply in mid 64.

If you can find a combo of these (3ply & beavertails)..

Well, that would be the Cat's A$$.

Then the 5ply shells with beavertails..

The BnB lugs were a poor design...just proned to cracking..

To bad they didn't remedy this earlier & create an option to order

Either 3ply or 5..with yr choice of bearing edges..lolol

The kit I'm looking at has B&B lugs.

I'm not sure of the tags inside yet but the SN are:

24039-tom

19685-FT

21144-BD

15304-snare

I'm going to look at this weekend & will note which version of the logo is on there. Is it possible to date Rogers drums with the serial number as we all do with the Ludwig's?

Don't rub it in. I had a late 1963 22" 3-ply Cleveland bass in unfaded Blue Ripple (uncommon finish and last year for that finish) with factory Beavertails. After years of searching, I finally gave up trying to find the matching toms (with Beavertails), so I sold it to member here. Only later did I realize how rare that bass was, as Blue Ripple was discontinued in 1964 and would never again be available with factory Beavertails.
