Can put the hardware from my Acrolite to a Pioneer snare shell? Last viewed: 2 seconds ago

I have a -69 Acro, but looking for a wood snare instead.

I found this Ludwig Pioneer shell on ebay:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/pre-serial-number-ludwig-14x5-blue-sparkle-3ply-snare-shell-pioneer-/162003519247?hash=item25b829870f:g:iNEAAOSwxp9W4jDZ

First, Is it possible to put the hardware from my acro to the pioneer?

Second, would you buy this shell from what you see on the pics? I have not so much experience with vintage snares, that´s why I´m asking.

You can swap the hardware. The lug hole spacing will be the same, as should the strainer and butt plate. Not a bad shell for the price. Might need a little fixing, but nothing major. A cheap clamp and wood glue will do the trick. That's mainly where it looks as though the re-ring is coming up. Wrap looks good, interior looks good otherwise. I'd go for it.

The lugs will fit the holes but there will be that open notch in the lug castings that's there for the bead on the metal shell. The throw off and butt should be fine. Biggest issue will be that a Pioneer shell will only be drilled for six lugs (acro has eight) so you will either have to redrill the pioneer shell to accommodate two additional lugs or you will need to get some six hole hoops.

As it happens, I have a set of 14" 6 hole snare hoops. Top and bottom. So if you decide to go with the 6 lugs, I can help you in the hoop department.

Thanks for your replies!

Ok, so mainly the re-ring will have to be glued.. Is it a big sonic difference between 6 and 8 lugs?

If I would go with 8 lugs and drill new holes, is it difficult to plug the old holes? Also what is the easiest way (for a beginner) to meassure where the new holes will be?

personally i would not re-drill it to an 8hole shell. Leave it as it is-it will sound just fine! And it´s the easiest way:-)

I had a look at the shell-leave it as it is-because if you drill it for 8 holes you probably also need to re-wrap it!

Yeah, I think I leave it as it is. How about the hoops, which ones would you go for, triple flanged?

Good call! That shell should not be messed with. Yes I'd go with triple-flange rims.
