Vintage Ludwig Super Classic Bass Drum hoop question.

Loading...

I recently purchased this red sparkle four piece Super Classic with matching Supraphonic. The kit is in good shape with typical road ware. The snare has some pitting. The shells are great and the wrap is firmly attached and still mostly vibrant. My question is in regards to the bass drum hoops. The inlay is mostly present but is missing a couple of small pieces. The hoops are in round but the paint is rough and there is typical pedal rash in more than one place. How much do the bass drum hoop issues lower the potential value of a kit like this? This kit is from 64-65 with time matching serial numbers.

It wouldn't be a 60's Ludwig bass drum without some paint chipping off the hoops!

That's pretty standard for 60's hoops, and doesn't affect the value much that I've seen.

As for the missing sparkle, it can be replaced.

Missing inlay strips are more of an issue with rare, hard to replace colors, although these days even rare colors can be replicated easily.

Thanks for the feedback. I ask because I had a fellow drum enthusiast from St. Louis tell me to stay away from this kit because the hoops are in semi rough shape. It has been my experience that most old hoops are rough and when you find some that look pristine they are usually replacements or refurb jobs. Do any of you agree to avoid kits with rough hoops (assuming of course they are still in working order)?

I prefer kits with full inlay, but would definitely not shy away from one that was missing some. Just rotate to the bottom of the kick and call it a day! Scuffs and missing paint can always be restored...plus...if you don't, then it just adds to the mojo of the kit!

Some may not agree with this, but if the hoops are too bad I refinish them.As has been said, the inlay can be replaced easily.Jim

Not an issue for me at all. For some reason, sanding & re-painting hoops is OK with most folks in the vintage drum world. Almost like replacing heads. I once turned down a kit because all the lug screws inside the drums had been replaced. But I'm OK with re-painted hoops. Go figure........marko Oh yeah, congrats on a nice kit.

It really depends what you spent for the set and the overall condition of the hardware, and especially the shells. The condition of the bearing edges, extra holes in the shells, and condition of the wrap would affect overall value more than the roughness of the hoops. I've seen a number of Ludwig kits from the late fifties though the 60's with hoops in as bad condition as yours, and even worse.

That guy might have been trying to throw you off so he could go get them.

I'd buy that set in a heartbeat. Refinish the hoops and watch ebay for some similar inlay to add. That snare is very desirable by itself
