I happened to come across a mid 90's Pearl Masters Custom Bop kit recently. 18" virgin bass drum, 12" tom, 14" floor tom. I must say, I am impressed with them. The bass drum is punchy and bright and both toms have a nice tone about them. Surely the thin maple shells help. The finish is natural maple w/chrome hardware. While it came with a 6.5"x14 snare, I haven't really messed with that yet. Too many go to snares for the application I guess. After doing a little research, I find they are pretty rare! Apparently, Bop kits weren't very popular in the mid 90's.
This somehow doesn't surprise me. I had a Pearl Blx this year and the build quality was exceptional. The shells were lacquered in and out and just sing. If it were bop kit sized I never would have sold them.
I've owned the Gretsch Renown 57 bop kit for a few years. Heavy as hell. Warm and quite loud. A gorgeous kit. The snare is killer too.
Larry I always like the decor on those 57's
Kenny Washington can make any drums sound great...

Thanks. Yes the light blues were issued first then shortly thereafter the red and black versions. My understanding is that production began and ended in 2012 with 125 sets made of each color. This is according to Gretsch. The blues are the coolest.
I get great results from my little modern bop kit. Got it from the original owner a few years ago. Supposedly 100 of those sets made in that wrap.
Original owner purchased it from Ressurection Drums in Miami. I have never seen another set like it.
